does cleansing balm clog pores

A woman has issued a word of warning after realizing many people have been using a popular skincare product incorrectly, potentially causing more harm than good.

Trisha, known to her followers as @radiatewtrish, took to TikTok to warn skincare enthusiasts about why they should “never use” two popular skincare products instead of a micellar water.

Worried that others had been using cleansing balms and oils in place of the makeup remover, she wanted to ensure viewers of the video understood the importance of emulsifying their products, reaching over 2 million people in the process.

The video came after she discovered how many people are using their products incorrectly, seeing cleansing oils and balms as a direct alternative to micellar water, a gentle solution used to remove makeup without need of washing.

Speaking to Newsweek, OnSkin’s biochemist and cosmetologist-aesthetician Valerie Aparovich said: “Cleansing balms and oils should be used as the first step of a cleansing routine followed by a water-based cleanser to remove all remaining impurities, eliminate oily residue, and allow active compounds from your following skincare products to penetrate the skin unhindered and efficiently.”

Unlike micellar waters, cleansing oils and balms require proper removal after application, meaning your cotton pad just isn’t going to cut it for this one.

What’s more, the thick formulas should be emulsified with water to ensure you’re getting the most out of your cleanser. Without emulsifying, you’re unable to work the product into the skin to break down any makeup left on your skin.

To do this, apply the balm or oil to dry skin and work into the skin by gently massaging. After the product has been applied, add some water to your face or in your hands and rub the product in while mixing the water for a minute or two, which should cause the product to become cloudy as it lifts any makeup or dirt from the skin’s surface. Then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

It’s not just the makeup that needs to be removed properly, but also the makeup removal product, as not properly washing off oils and balms can leave residue on the skin. In the video’s caption she explained how, “if you don’t emulsify, the cleansing oil may leave a residue on your skin, potentially leading to clogged pores and cause breakouts!”

“When oily residue from using a cleansing balm or oil is not removed adequately, it can compromise oily and combination skin, provoking pore clogging, blackhead formation, inflammation, and acne breakouts,” Aparovich said. “The risks increase dramatically if the product you use contains comedogenic ingredients. Cacao, palm, coconut, and wheat germ oils are the oils with the highest comedogenicity rate.

“Leaving a cleansing balm or oil on may result in over-dryness, tightness, redness, and irritation in people with very dry and hypersensitive skin. As lipid components in cleansers naturally bind to the oils on your skin, they can strip it and compromise the skin’s barrier, causing it to degrade and break down.”

In addition to emulsifying, double cleansing can be a vital step in your nighttime skincare routine. Following your makeup remover—whether that’s a balm, oil, or micellar water—with a second cleanser ensures your skin isn’t just makeup free, but also free of any leftover product. This second cleanse is also a great way to introduce active ingredients, which can work to target any skin concerns such as acne and discoloration.

“Follow up with classic skincare steps, such as toning to restore the skin’s pH and a well-formulated moisturizer suitable for your skin type to prevent transepidermal water loss, replenish the skin’s hydrolipid balance, and strengthen its moisture barrier,” Aparovich said.

What Do the Comments Say?

Those in the know back up Trisha, as one TikTok user wrote: “Please emulsify ladies. My skin never been better after using cleansing oil. I have oily and acne prone skin btw.”

“When I realized the amount of time I spent washing my face was more important than the amount of products I put on my face everything changed!!” added another.

For others, the viral video was a wake-up call. One user wrote: “Ohh so i’ve been doing it wrong the whole time.”

“I’ve always wondered how to properly use oil cleansers !!” said another. “I have sensitive skin and when I wear heavy makeup idk how to properly rinse oil cleansers.”

Newsweek reached out to Trisha for comment via email.
