.Will the fats of omega-3 be harmful to my dog? Omega-3 fatty acids are “good fats” that are essential for optimal health. Like humans, animals must obtain omega-3 from the diet as it is not produced in the body. EPA and DHA are the active forms of omega-3 required by the body to perform vital functions. Insufficient omega-3 intake can have a significant impact on overall health. Due to domestication, the dietary needs of dogs are typically met with cereal-type grains and vegetable oils, which are very high in omega-6 fatty acids and extremely low in omega-3. This has led to a deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids, where the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is 1:15 instead of the optimal 1:1.
.Why do dogs need omega-3? A decreased amount of omega-3 relative to omega-6 in the diet results in an increased risk of degenerative disease. One of the most damaging effects of EFA imbalance is the development of chronic inflammation. Clinical research has established a link between chronic inflammation and a broad range of degenerative conditions such as heart disease, immune dysfunction, arthritis and behavioural disorders. Another remarkable benefit of omega-3 fatty acids is the ability to contribute to the healing of dermatological disorders as well as cosmetic improvements to the sheen of a dog’s coat.
.What is the difference between omega-3 from fish oil and omega-3 from flax? Fish oil is nature’s richest source of EPA and DHA. Botanical sources of omega-3 such as flax do not contain EPA and DHA instead they provide its precursor ALA. Mammals have a genetic make-up that severely limits the conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA thereby making plant based omega-3 far less potent. Canine Omega-3 is an excellent source of the omega-3 EPA and DHA and provides optimum benefits for the health of dogs.

.Are Ascenta’s animal omega-3 supplements pharmaceutical grade? We use the term “pharmaceutical grade” to convey the superior quality and purity of our products but this term is not an official classification for fish oil and there are currently no standards that define pharmaceutical grade fish oil (the definition cited in the book “OmegaRx” by Barry Sears is not derived from a regulated source). Some companies use the term “medical grade” fish oil which, like “pharmaceutical grade”, is not an official classification. The most important criterion for quality is that the fish oil surpasses all the standards set forth by the CRN (Council for Responsible Nutrition). These internationally accepted standards are the most stringent in the industry and only the highest quality fish oils meet these standards. Ascenta’s animal omega-3 supplements surpass all CRN standards for quality and purity.
.Are Ascenta’s animal omega-3 supplements molecular distilled? The advanced proprietary purification of our products utilizes several purification processes, including molecular distillation, that result in the highest levels of quality and purity available.
.Are Ascenta’s animal omega-3 supplements third party tested? Yes, each product batch is tested for over 400 contaminants by at least one independent laboratory through our Pure Check program. Pure Check guarantees that each product batch is tested for quality, purity and label claims before being released to market. Furthermore, we post the Pure Check quality test results on our website www.ascentaanimalhealth.com for you to see. Pure Check is your guarantee that our products surpass the industries’ most stringent standards for quality and purity.
.Is the oil cold pressed? Cold pressing is possible for plant materials such as flax seed or olives but cannot be employed for the processing of fish oils. Some processing and purification stages require the oil to be heated. In the processing of our products these stages are carefully performed under a strict oxygen free environment and are carefully monitored so that the final product is of the highest quality and purity.
.Do your animal omega-3 supplements come from wild or farmed fish? Ascenta’s animal omega-3 supplements are produced from wild fish of the herring family (sardines and anchovies). Wild fish are generally higher in Omega-3 and do not contain the levels of environmental contaminants found in farmed fish.
.Ascenta’s animal omega-3 supplements are from fish – will they taste fishy to animals? A fishy taste is only characteristic of lesser quality fish oils. Our supplements undergo processing that removes volatile compounds that can cause unpleasant odors or taste. A fishy odor or taste is also caused by rancidity. Rancidity occurs when the oil starts to oxidize (breakdown). Ascenta’s animal omega-3 products contain a proprietary natural antioxidant blend that protects it against oxidation.
.Why do your fish oil supplements become cloudy after they have been in the fridge for a while? The development of cloudy sediment near the bottom of the bottle after refrigeration is completely normal and does not affect quality. All oils have what is called a “melting point”. The melting point simply indicates the temperature at which the oil goes from a liquid to solid state or vice versa. If you’ve ever put olive oil in the fridge you would have noticed how quickly it turned into a cloudy thick liquid. If you return it to room temperature it turns back to a completely clear liquid. This process also occurs with fish oil except that fish oil starts to turn solid at a lower temperature than olive oil. Therefore, depending on the temperature of your fridge you may or may not see a slight cloudiness near the bottom of the bottle.
.Why are your products packaged in an amber glass bottle? Ascenta uses glass bottles to package most of its omega-3 fish oil as the stability of the product is better maintained in amber glass bottles which does not let the light directly affect them. Further, glass is easily recycled all over the world and breaks down in landfills without contributing more toxins to the environment.
