I am a huge fan of Kiwi fruit. Did you know there is a golden kiwi as well? Often called Kiwi Gold, Gold Kiwifruit, Zespri Gold, Sungold kiwifruit, Yellow Kiwis, etc. just might be better than the classic green kiwi.
One of my favorite things to do is experience and taste new fruits as well as eat my favorite fruits. I have always enjoyed eating kiwi fruit ever since I was little. We would often have it with strawberries and dip slices in sour cream and then in brown sugar. So yummy!

Where does Kiwi Gold or Golden Kiwi come from?
The Actinidia chinensis, most commonly known as the golden kiwifruit or gold kiwi is a fruiting vine that originated in China. It is very closely related to the Actinidia deliciosa which is the most common green kiwi.
The kiwi gold has a nice smooth skin as opposed to the fuzzy skin of the classic green kiwi fruit. The common varieties that are grown and sold are the Zespri Gold also known as SunGold.
In the early 1900’s they were exported from China to New Zealand, where they thrived. We most commonly associate the Kiwi as a “New Zealand” fruit.
They also grow very well in Italy. In fact, did you know that Italy produces/grows more Kiwi Gold than any other country? Pretty interesting!
The Golden Kiwi grows in a variety of countries around the world. The kiwi vines also grow very well in the United States. They thrive in mild temperate climates. You can easily grow them in parts of California, Texas, Kentucky, Alabama, etc.

How to eat the yellow kiwi? When are kiwis ripe?
You eat the gold kiwi like any other green kiwi fruit. Wash the fruit well with water. Then there are a few ways you can eat it. Slice it in half.
A ripe kiwi will be slightly soft to the touch and have a little bit of give when you squeeze them with slight pressure.
If they are still really hard, allow them to ripen in the fridge or on the counter at room temperature for a little longer. to speed up the ripening process place them in a paper bag with a banana.
Then take a spoon and scoop out the yellow flesh. This is a very common way to eat both varieties of kiwi.
You can use a pairing knife or peeler and remove the outer fuzzy brown skin and slice it up if you like. Which is another common way.
Or you can just slice it with the skin on and eat it. The skin is very nutritious. Most people I know of here in the United States don’t eat the skin. But the skin is more appetizing on the gold kiwi than it is on the green kiwi, both of which are edible.
Honestly, you can also just take the whole fruit and just bite into it after washing it. So there are several ways to eat this wonderful fruit. Lots of people like putting them in fruit salads.
What does golden kiwi fruit taste like?
First of all, I enjoy this variety of kiwi more than a classic green kiwifruit. The kiwi gold is more sweet and less tart than the green variety. It has a very pleasant soft texture with fewer seeds.
There is a small hint of pineapple and mango that I can detect as well. Overall such a pleasing rare combination of tangy-sweet taste, which makes it rank very high among my favorite fruits to eat.
Of course, taste is subjective, but if you haven’t tried this variety before, give it a try! I definitely thing this is the best-tasting kiwifruit.
