Ferries

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry crosses the James River between James City County and Surry County. The ferry is free and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including major holidays.

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry is currently operating under the non-summer schedule as of July 26, 2024, as staffing and vessel resources allow.

Please check the schedule prior to arriving at the docks as ferry departure times vary. The ferry does not always depart on the half-hour and hour.

Once on board, the trip is approximately 20 minutes.

Directions

From Washington, D.C., and Richmond to the Jamestown Dock:

• Take Interstate 95 South.
• Just north of Richmond, take Interstate 295 South to Interstate 64 East towards Williamsburg.
• Once in Williamsburg, take the Lightfoot / Route 199 exit from I-64 East.
• Follow Route 199 to Jamestown Road (Route 31).
• Route 31 will take you straight to the ferry dock.

From the Lynchburg area to the Surry Dock:

• Take the Route 265 (Route 29 Bypass) to Danville.
• Once in Danville, continue on the bypass until you reach South Boston / Route 58 East.
• Take the South Boston / Route 58 East exit.
• Continue on Route 58 East to I-95 North in Emporia.
• Take I-95 North to Exit 31 and take Route 40 East.
• Go on Route 40 for 22 miles to Waverly, then 12 more miles to the intersection of Route 10.
• Take Route 10 East for eight miles to Surry and the intersection with Route 31.
• Take Route 31 North from Surry to the Scotland ferry landing.

Restrictions

• Height: 12 feet 6 inches.
• Width: Legal limits for highway travel.
• Length: Legal limits for highway travel.
• Weight: 16 tons for large trucks, 28 tons for semi-tractor combinations.
• The ferry can only transport liquid or materials that are not required to display a HAZMAT placard as required by Department of Transportation rules.

Ferry fleet

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry fleet is made up of four ferries:

• Pocahontas, built in 1995, can carry 70 cars.
• Powhatan, built in 2019, can carry 70 cars.
• Surry, built in 1979, can carry 50 cars.
• Williamsburg, built in 1983, can carry 50 cars.
