When I did my Matte Burgundy Nails with Blood Dripping from the Tips a little while ago, I really liked the effect of the glossy design popping and glistening on the matte base. And, while that look was anything but subtle, it got me thinking that using glossy top coat over a matte base would be a really cool way at adding a subtle design to a manicure. I decided to throw on a matte top coat over a basic black mani with a burgundy gradient on the accent nails and see what I could do with some glossy top coat on a dotting tool or a brush. You could also do the opposite and use a matte top coat for designs over a glossy nail.
If you haven’t been painstakingly taking notes on all the products I use (gosh why not) then I’ll mention that I use gel and fake nails (wow more links there weren’t enough already). It doesn’t make a difference what kind/shape/color of nails or polish you use for this look; just remember to let your base color be fully dry or cured before you get going. Speaking of, I’ll shut up now and tell you what I actually did.

Look #1: Drips from the TipsThis one is exactly the same process as that other look I already mentioned that inspired this, but with glossy top coat instead of colored polish. So it’s the same process: swipe some of the glossy top coat across the tips of your nails…
place large-ish dots of the top coat sort of randomly with a dotting tool…
and then use a brush or a smaller dotting tool to connect the dots to the top in a squiggly-ish way that makes them look like liquid dripping down.
Cure or let dry and you’re done!

Look#2: Shiny SwirlsI wanted to make some of these make sense with a gradient base color, since I love that matte ombré look, so that was my goal with this one. It’s super easy and customizable; this is just one idea. I used a dotting tool with some glossy top coat on it—again, a brush will work as well; I just like the extra control I get with a dotting tool—to swipe on this design.
I made some come towards the top and then some come from the bottom.
Cure and you’re done!
Look #3: Glossy GradientThis…………. looked really cool in theory. I almost just didn’t include it, but I think that maybe with a different matte topcoat (mine isn’t great) or even a different makeup sponge it could have worked, but I just had issues getting the matte top coat to lay smooth and even in the way it needs to be to, well, look good. So maybe one of you will have better luck than I did, and for that reason, I’m still including it. Start by painting your makeup sponge (non-latex is best) half with the matte top coat and half with the glossy top coat (ideally lining up with the transition on the base color gradient)…
And then sponge it onto the nail like any gradient (if you don’t know how to do that, check out my sunset gradient tutorial where I explain it more in-depth and, uh, do a better job). I should have used a latex barrier on my cuticles to make the cleanup easier, but clearly I wasn’t planning on doing anything right on this nail.
And, uh, yeah. Nail fail.

Look #4: Shiny StripesThis is suuuper easy, and super cute. Just take a detail brush (or a striping brush) and add stripes where you want. I did three horizontal ones towards the tip of the nail, but you could also do more stripes, vertical stripes, or even a grid if you want.
Cure or let dry when you are done, of course!
Look #5: Shiny SpotsPolka dots are a classic, and doing something fun like varying the sizes as you go can make them even more visually interesting. I just used different-sized dotting tools to place the glossy top coat like so.
Like the stripes and the swirls, you can pretty much use the dots in any pattern or design you like—this is just one idea!
