Updated February 2024! On road trips out west, that big yellow arrow is a welcome site around lunch time. In-n-Out Burger has become the spot for grabbing a bite while running errands or for pit stops on long highway stretches. And it isn’t because they have a wildly creative menu. In fact, they pretty much make one thing, hamburgers with fries. But they do it quite well.

Dairy-Free Menu Guide for In-n-Out Burger with Allergen Notes

This is the easiest dairy-free menu guide I’ve ever made, since the In-n-Out food menu has less than five items on it. Yes, their buns are dairy-free, and their sauces are dairy-free. Just avoid the cheese and milkshakes (sorry!) and you are good to go. But to make ordering even more seamless, I’ve added some additional menu and food notes.

Butter & Cheese Note: At last check, In-n-Out Burger still does not butter their buns. But ask about a clean grill space if your location adds cheese to burgers while they are on the grill.

Other Allergen & Dietary Notes: In-n-Out Burger does not use peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, shellfish, or fish in their restaurants. Egg-free guests should skip the spread (order Ketchup & Mustard instead), and Soy-Free guests should skip the spread and order Protein-Style. The buns contain soy. All items listed below are made without wheat, except the buns. Order protein-style burgers for gluten-free needs. We have also noted which items are vegan, which is pretty much the French fries with ketchup.

Burgers

  • Hamburger
  • Double Double Burger (no cheese)

Not-So-Secret Menu Options:

  • Double Meat: Order this instead of the Double Double to add an extra hamburger patty to your regular (no cheese) burger.
  • Protein Style (Gluten-Free): Place this order if you want your burger in a lettuce wrap instead of a bun. Their bun is dairy-free (but does contain wheat) and is not buttered.
  • Animal Style: Order this if you want your patty cooked with mustard, and your burger topped with extra spread, pickles, and grilled onions (instead of raw).
  • Ketchup & Mustard Swap: If you aren’t a fan of their spread (it’s basically Thousand Island and is dairy-free), you can order ketchup and mustard instead.

Sides

  • French Fries (vegan)

Fryer Note: The French Fries are made with fresh sliced potatoes, cooked in 100% sunflower oil, and they are the only fried food at In-n-Out Burger.

There is always a risk for potential cross-contamination of allergens in any commercial kitchen. If cross-contamination is an issue for you, always speak with the manager to ensure that your meal can be safely prepared. Listings here do not guarantee that a restaurant is safe enough for your individual needs. Only you can make that decision.

Each location of a chain restaurant has different management and staff, and some might have different owners. This means differences in processes, ingredients used, menu options, and food sourcing can occur. Always verify the safety of your order for your needs at your current location.
