This 5-ingredient everything bagel seasoning takes less than 5 minutes to make. It tastes just like the store-bought stuff and stays fresh for months in your spice cabinet!
The Internet’s Favorite Seasoning
Everything bagel seasoning saw its rise in popularity a few years ago when it quickly became a staple in many homes (mine included!). If you’ve never tried it, it’s a simple seasoning made from seeds, dehydrated vegetables, and salt-essentially everything you’d see on an everything bagel, minus the bagel! It’s a low-calorie flavor booster that tastes great on pretty much anything.

This is super basic recipe, but I wanted to share my version simply because of how often I use it at home (especially on top of my sourdough bread, bagels, and sourdough crackers). It’s also super inexpensive to make at home and it has a long shelf life, so it’s great for making in bulk.

While I’m sharing a classic/traditional seasoning with you today, feel free to customize and adjust if needed (more garlic, anyone?). Some people even like to add dill to theirs, which I think sounds pretty tasty. You can even remove the salt if you need to reduce your sodium intake. That’s the beauty of making your own seasoning!

What You Need
So, what is in this bagel seasoning? Well, a little bit of everything! Most, if not all, of these ingredients should already be in your spice cabinet. Here’s what you need:
- Dried minced onion. This can be found in the spice aisle of your grocery store. Make sure to use minced onion and not the granulated or powdered version.
- Salt. Use a larger salt, like flaky salt or coarse kosher salt. This helps the salt stay suspended in the seasoning instead of allowing it fall to the bottom.
- Poppy seeds. You might have some of these lying around if you’ve made lemon poppy seed muffins or scones. I love the contrast and texture they add to this seasoning!
- Dried minced garlic. Don’t use garlic powder; it’s too fine for this recipe. Stick with dried minced garlic, and feel free to add more if you like a lot of garlic (if you do, you’ll probably enjoy my garlic knots or garlic cheese drop biscuits too!).
- Sesame seeds. You can use white or black sesame seeds, or a blend of the two. Toasted sesame seeds would also be great here.
FUN FACT: The Everything Bagel, which this seasoning mix gets its name from, was created in the 1980s. It’s called “Everything” because it includes all the toppings found on other types of bagels.
