Lately, I’ve been trying to find a solid drugstore cruelty free hair mask, so I picked up the Raw Sugar Hair Mask to test out and try. I use hair masks instead of conditioner, so finding an affordable option would be a welcome change to my wallet! Raw Sugar has three different kinds of hair masks, which I will explain below, but I personally tried the Healing Power Avocado + Banana Oil + Coconut Milk + Agave Hair Mask. That’s a mouthful!
Raw Sugar is a cruelty free and vegan brand I’ve seen all over my social media but have yet to try myself. They are sold at a variety of drugstore type of retailers, and I picked mine up at Target. I definitely plan to try out other products from their line because I’ve heard great things! It’s wonderful they are such an accessible and affordable cruelty free bath and body brand, with a wide range of products!

I grabbed the healing power formula mainly because I was hoping it would leave my hair soft and silky, and shine wasn’t a big issue for me.
More about the Raw Sugar Healing Power Avocado + Banana Oil + Coconut Milk + Agave Hair Mask:
From the Raw Sugar website: “Immerse your hair in the ultimate Healing Power of Avocado + Banana Oil + Coconut Milk + Agave nutrients: a super dose of nourishment for shinier, stronger, visibly healthier hair. An indulgent blend of nature’s highly nourishing plant-derived power ingredients repair over-worked hair that’s in need of a little Raw lovin’.”
You use as you would any other hair mask. After cleansing your hair put the hair mask on, coating generously. Leave on for 5-10 minutes then wash out!
I’ve been using the healing power hair mask for around 2 months now pretty consistently, and I have to say while it’s not awful, it’s definitely not a favorite.
First of all, it’s quite thick. The first time I used the Raw Sugar hair mask, I scooped some up from the container and started applying to my hair, but it was so thick it mostly fell right out into the tub. It’s SUCH a thick formula that you really have to make sure you work it in. I now find I have most success when I rub it throughly in my hands first before applying, and then making sure I work it in for a while. That isn’t that much of an issue for me, but something to note.
However, with the thickness, means it takes a while to rinse out. There were a few times where I realized that I missed a little bit here or there after I already got out of the shower. You definitely need to be very thorough when washing out and double checking that you’ve gotten everything out

Nothing worse than realizing you accidentally missed a spot while washing out a product, especially when you only was your hair 1-2x per week!
Now that I know that, I am more careful and do not find that I have that problem anymore.
Also want to note that it doesn’t leave my hair feeling greasy or heavy in anyway. It’s not weighed down at all.
It’s one of those hair products that I feel is more just on the surface of my hair rather than sinking deep and improving my hair, if that makes sense. Almost like it’s coating it while it’s on, but then the coating mostly just rinses away afterwards.
I truly could put all of that aside though it it made a difference with the softness of my hair. That is all I really care about with hair masks, tbh. However this Real Sugar Hair Mask didn’t make my hair nearly as soft as I’d like it to. Did I notice a difference? Yes. But have I used other hair masks that make significantly more of a difference when it comes to softness? Yes, absolutely.
This one in particular is my top fave, although it should be noted that when I went to link to this review post, I realized they have since reformulated the hair mask. I can’t speak to the current formulation because I haven’t yet tested it out myself, but hopefully it’s still just as good if not better as it was previously!
So, all in all, even though this was such a highly rated hair mask on Target from the Raw Sugar line, it unfortunately won’t be a repurchase for me. It’s a good mask, but I feel that for my hair type it’s not the best fit.
Clearly, since my previous fave has changed, and this one isn’t working for me, I need to keep searching! Any recommendations…I might need to place a hair mask order tonight and get to reviewing some more asap!
