I just want to thank God first, BabyCenter second, and Tubby Todds third! WARNING, lengthy post! (Skip to paragraph 5 to bypass the back story and see pics). My story begins at 1 month into being a first time mom. I made the mistake of bathing my newborn in water that was too warm and then using Aveeno baby wash and lotion without thoroughly rinsing it off. Additionally, I washed all my baby’s clothes in double the suggested amount of Dreft plus added Dreft fabric scent beads because I just love the smell and wanted my LO to have that new baby smell when family holds her. These mistakes were the perfect recipe for her to develop baby acne, milia, and later nummular eczema. The water being too warm weakened my LO ‘s skins protective barrier that was still developing. The Aveeno baby lotion contains Benzyl Alcohol, a toxic anti parasite medication which strips skin of its natural protection and is not for use on babies 6 months or younger. Why they would put this in their baby product with no warning beats me! Maybe it’s designed to trigger eczema so you keep buying their product? Idk, just a theory. But I digress. I didn’t rinse my baby thoroughly because I thought, it’s just baby wash. It’s light and gentle so no need. The overuse of Dreft and the scent beads became an irritatant and my baby’s skin which quickly broke out with acne and milia after just 1.5 months. Luckily I was already a member of BabyCenter, ran a search on eczema and discovered the many great reviews on Tubby Todd’s All Over Ointment (AOO). I bought it but also went to my LO’s pediatrician who said the rash and acne will clear up on its own. I didn’t want to wait for that so I tried the TT AOO and her rash cleared up in 2 days. I thought, there’s no way this product worked that fast. It must have cleared on its own like the doctor said So I tossed the TT AOO in the bin full of baby products. Fast forward to month 3 when my LO developed nummular eczema! I cried and researched and cried and researched! That’s when I learned about all the possible causes which I eliminated and all the possible treatments to calm my LO’s inflamed skin. Nothing was working! At her 3 month follow up her pediatrician prescribed 1% hydrocortisone. I absolutely did not want to put steroids on my newborn! So I stalled and kept trying lotions but nothing worked! After pressure from the pediatrician and my husband who thinks “doctors know best. There’s a reason why they spent all that time in school,” I gave in and we used the steroids. The 1% hydrocortisone reduced the flares by about 60% and I felt so much better. We stopped use after 5 days as instructed. Two days later, her nummular eczema came back with a vengeance!!! It looked like islands of sandpaper! We rushed to urgent care and the on call pediatrician prescribed a stronger dose of hydrocortisone at 2.5%! I smiled, thanked the doctor, and when we got home I told my husband absolutely not! I got on my computer to do a search and a post from BabyCenter popped up in my results. Tubby Todd! How could I forget? It was worth a try to see if it really was the cause of my daughter’s skin clearing up in month 1. I didn’t want to take any chances of having to use the stronger steroids so I went all in with the TT AOO. I bathed my LO, generously applied the TT AOO, followed that with vaseline, then followed that with wet Brauwny paper towels wrapped all over her body. I put her ‘sleep n play’ over and put her to bed. The next morning her skin was 80% improved! Better than when we used the 1% hydrocortisone for 5 days. I repeated this throughout the day as needed when the paper towels dried and again at night. On day two my LO’s skin was 99% back to normal but I went 5 days just in case. She’s now 4 months and she has not had another flare up since. I’m now treating her cradle cap with it.
I left a review on TT but just realized I never returned the blessing to BabyCenter for helping me. For any mother reading this, please try Tubby Todd’s All Over Ointment before taking the steroids (hydrocortisone) route. I hope this post helps someone as a post did for me! *see before and after pics.*
