Subarus have never been lookers. In fact, when the Japanese automaker first came to the U.S. with the 360 hatchback, it willingly advertised the car as cheap and ugly. Subarus often drive well though, and that’s true for the compact 2014 Subaru Impreza.
The five-passenger 2014 Impreza is available in sedan or hatchback body styles in 2.0i, 2.0i Premium and 2.0i Limited trim levels. The hatchback adds 2.0i Sport Premium and 2.0i Sport Limited trims. All are powered by a 2.0-liter Boxer four-cylinder that produces 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. Power is put down to all four wheels with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system through either a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT. In MT testing, a manual-equipped hatchback accelerated from 0-60 mph in 8.0 seconds, while a CVT-equipped sedan took 9.4 seconds. The Impreza is fun to toss into corners, especially the WRX and STI variants. Also available as a sedan or hatchback, the WRX and STI offer even more thrills.

The WRX steps it up with a 2.5-liter Boxer four that puts out 265 hp and 244 lb-ft of torque, paired to a five-speed manual. The STI kicks it up a notch by squeezing out 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque from the same engine. The STI also gets one more cog for a standard six-speed manual transmission. Both also get visual enhancements as well; WRX trim gets summer tires, sport-tuned suspension, sport front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob among other things. The WRX STI further adds sportier 18-inch BBS wheels, Brembo brakes, tuned suspension, hood scoop, sunroof, and leather and suede seats. The WRX and STI trims are the ones to get if you’re considering an Impreza, though we’d suggest waiting it out as a new and more efficient WRX is slated for the 2015 model year.
What’s new for 2014
The 2014 Subaru Impreza gets a standard rearview camera on Limited models, while higher trim models also get an Aha infotainment system in addition to the navigation system. WRX and STI models also these new additions, as well as slight price bump.
