Here’s a new twist on an old saying: “Race on Sunday, street on Monday.” Prodrive, the English company with a sterling reputation for building winning race cars (including its World Rally Championship-winning Subaru WRX rally cars and the super vicious ALMS Ferrari 550 Maranello), has come up with a line of performance parts to transform the WRX into an even more potent player. One such collection comes together as the PRO 400 WRX.
Prodrive employs subtle yet effective power mods aimed at getting the standard 227-horsepower WRX to perform more like the upcoming 300-horse STi. An increased-flow intercooler Y-pipe, specially calibrated ECU, a high-flow catalytic converter, and mandrel-bent stainless-steel high-flow exhaust system team to produce 69 more dyno-proven ponies. You don’t need to be an MIT grad to understand how the added power translates into solid performance gains. Zero to 60 happens in 5.0 seconds, and covering 1320 feet of tarmac takes 13.7 ticks of the Timex.

As you can tell from those WRC in-car camera shots on the Speed Channel, rally-winning performance requires more than straight-line punch. Thus, Prodrive offers a well-sorted suspension package that includes stiffer coil springs (that lower ride height by 20 mm), special alignment specs, and Prodrive PFF-7 18×8.0-inch forged-aluminum wheels wrapped by grippy Bridgestone Potenza S-03 225/40ZR18 tires. At the track, the improved suspension and added go power teamed to deliver a 5.87-mph increase in the 600-foot slalom test. That’s huge, folks. On the street, the suspension isn’t harsh and delivers more predictability in real-world cornering. Prodrive also offers a brake package consisting of 14-inch slotted rotors, Alcon four-piston calipers, and special pads that deliver great pedal modulation and feel.
Exterior mods include a wind-tunnel-tested front spoiler/rear wing package that actually works. To improve nighttime visibility, Prodrive offers an optional twin-headlight and halogen driving light kit; the combo will set you back $1100. A wire-mesh front grille set adds a bit of European flair. If you already own a WRX and don’t feel like trading up for an STi, Prodrive has you covered. It offers well-sorted hardware that improves performance without going over the top or compromising the standard car’s safe, all-weather prowess. And the cachet of having hardware designed by the people who make WRXs fly through the air in WRC and SCCA ProRally events is worth something, too.
