Does your French Bulldog struggle with environmental allergies? The benefits of Salmon Oil for dogs with allergies are pretty amazing. Keep reading for additional info on how Salmon Oil may be a beneficial supplement for your dog.
French Bulldogs are known to have both food and skin allergies. If you’re looking for a French Bulldog puppy, be sure to check out my blog post “Question To Ask A Frenchie Breeder” for tips on how to try and determine if your pup might be prone to having allergies. I’ve really tried to focus on finding more natural approaches to the dog’s allergies. After doing a lot of research and consulting with my Vet, I truly feel using Salmon oil for dogs with allergies can be beneficial.
Luna and Yoda both have environmental allergies. Yoda’s allergies are pretty minimal and easily managed, whereas Luna is high maintenance. She has to be wiped-off each time she goes outside during Spring, Summer, and Fall to remove any allergens she may have come into contact with.

Luna is bathed weekly for the same reason. Bathing weekly was recommended to me by our vet and, that has worked out pretty well for her. Both of our Frenchie’s get hives when they come into contact with an allergen. They appear as large raised bumps, so they’re pretty easy for us to spot.
Luna gets hot spots, dry patches of skin and, that prompted me to seek out natural treatment options. Many prescription drugs only alleviate skin irritation in dogs due to their allergies (steroids, Apoquel, Cytopoint, etc.). I don’t love the side effects of many of them, so I try and stick with more natural remedies when I can. I always consult with my Vet when considering switching from prescriptions for a more natural approach.
We very rarely have to treat Luna with any steroids, and we kicked Apoquel to the curb as well. Thanks to the Salmon Oil, weekly baths, applying our favorite skincare products (Check them out on this blog entry), and using our custom allergy serum from Nelco Vet.
So how does Salmon Oil help dogs with allergies?
- It helps to produce more collagen, which can mean healthier skin, bones, and joints in your dog.
- It can create a barrier against allergens.
- It can alleviate inflammation, which is a typical condition for dogs with skin allergies.
- It reduces shedding and dandruff.
- The Omega 3 fatty acids promote healthy, soft skin and a shiny coat.
- Omega 3 fatty acids cannot be synthesized by the body, and EPA and DHA are important fatty acids that have the most health benefits. Salmon Oil is a fantastic way to supplement your dog’s diet to make sure s/he is receiving adequate amounts of these nutrients.

There are a lot of different Salmon Oil brands that are formulated for dogs. I went with Zesty Paws because their entire company is geared towards animal health, it contains both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, and the pump makes it easy to add to our dog’s meals. I add this to our pup’s food at dinner time, and they LOVE it. They’re receiving amazing health benefits, but they also think they’re getting a special treat at dinner.
Now that I’ve started supplementing with Zesty Paws Salmon Oil, Luna has not had any issues with dry patches of skin, the texture of her skin has improved, and her fur is soft and shiny! Before starting this, Luna’s fur was so coarse and dry that I couldn’t allow my face to get near hers because it would irritate my skin! That’s no longer a problem at all. I’ve even started using more of the Zesty Paws supplements and have been happy with all of their amazing health benefits.
In early Spring, Okja (our Frenchie-Pit mix) also started showing signs of dandruff and dry skin. I started supplementing her food at dinner time with Salmon Oil, and I was honestly shocked that her dandruff completely disappeared. I am so happy I made the choice to look into Salmon Oil’s benefits for dogs with allergies. Always make sure to consult with your Vet before making adding this supplement to your dog’s diet, but I hope it works as well for you as it has for us!

Bonus from Healthy Eating with Chef AM!
My good friend, who has a fantastic blog, and studies nutrition, sent some great information on the benefits of Salmon Oil. Her blog is written for the health of humans, but oftentimes these health benefits can translate into the world of dogs. I encourage you to check her out at – Healthy Eating with Chef AM. Here’s what she had to say about the benefits of Salmon Oil:

“Just as for humans, we need adequate amounts of nutrients for our bodies to function properly. The same goes for dogs, dogs with skin conditions may be lacking certain nutrients. There are natural remedies to help most conditions. As for sensitive skin due to allergies for dogs, salmon oil may be a good place to start. Just as you would supplement with fish oil for health benefits, the health benefits are similar for dogs.
What is Salmon Oil, EPA and DHA?
In this case, salmon oil is exactly what it sounds like -The extracted healthy fats from salmon. Healthy fats are a crucial component in anyone’s diet and that includes your pets. Fish is something that should be consumed every week. If you lack the consumption of fish, fish oil is a good option to make sure you are getting adequate nutrient intake. The salmon oil contains high concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids (healthy fats). Omega 3 fatty acids are found mainly in fish and these are further broken down into types of omega 3 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (or EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (or DHA).
Something else to note is that not all fish oils are created equal or supplements in general. So, it is always best to do research on the product and company before consumption.”
Reminder
You must consult with your vet before starting your dog on any new supplements. I give Salmon Oil to all of my dogs, and they’ve all responded very well to it, but there’s always a possibility for adverse reactions. Your Vet can discuss any concerns you may have about new supplements.
