French pharmacy brands get a lot of love in the skincare world. Why? Affordable and efficacious, these no-frills brands often champion dermatologist-approved ingredients, without adding a bunch of trending fillers purely for marketing hype.

And which brand is at the helm of the French skincare aisle? La Roche-Posay, of course. From their cult SPFs to Accutane-user approved calming skincare range — La Roche-Posay’s extensive skincare collection caters for all, at an affordable price tag.

So if your mates have previously recommended La Roche-Posay, but you weren’t really sure where to start, or which products were right for you, we’ve broken it down.

Below you’ll find the WH guide on what you should be buying from this heralded skincare brand — with an AM and PM routine, broken down by your skin concern.

La Roche Posay routine for: Acne-prone skin

A.M. routine

1/ Cleanse

In the morning, you want a non-stripping cleanser that will help to control sebum production and wash away any excess oils that have been produced overnight. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Cleansing Gel is formulated to control sebum and cleanse the skin without stripping.

2/ Moisturise

Follow your morning cleanse with La Roche-Posay’s best-selling Effaclar Duo+ Moisturiser. It contains salicylic acid which is renowned for fighting blemishes and persistent breakouts. While niacinamide and thermal spring water helps to soothe, prevent inflammation and persistent marks.

3/ SPF

Effaclar Duo+ comes with SPF 30, but for a full broad-spectrum SPF that really packs-a-punch La Roche Posay’s Anthelios Oil Control SPF 50+ is created with oily, acne prone skin in mind. Its non-greasy formula that helps to absorb oil while protecting the skin.

4/ Body wash

If you suffer from breakouts on the body the La Roche Posay Effaclar Micro-Peeling Purifying Gel is a strong 2% salicylic acid wash that’s great to treat body acne and can be used daily.

P.M. routine

1/ Cleanse and moisturise

For your evening routine, you can use the same Effaclar Purifying Cleansing Gel and follow with Effaclar Duo+ Moisturiser.

2/ Spot treatment

To target an individual blemish La Roche Posay Effaclar A.I is a powerful formula that works to reduce spot size overnight.

3/ Prescription-friendly skincare

If you have severe acne and are using prescription treatments it’s important to use the right skincare to accompany this.

The Effaclar H Cleanser and Moisturiser are designed to be used alongside acne-focussed antibiotics and topical treatments.

La Roche Posay routine for: Sensitive skin

A.M. routine

All of La Roche-Posay’s products are made for (and tested on) sensitive skin. If, however, you suffer from sensitive skin problems such as rosacea or would like to build your skin tolerance this is the routine for you.

1/ Cleanse

Cleanse with Toleriane Dermo Cleanser this is perfect for cleansing and makeup removal, as the simple formula is designed to be non-irratating while still super effective.

2/ Serum

Follow with Toleriane Ultra Dermallergo Serum – this new serum has been created with 0.1% neurosensine, an exclusive peptide which when combined with La Roche-Posay’s Thermal Spring Water helps to calm sensitivity and repair the skin barrier.

3/ Moisturise

If you are very dehydrated follow with a Toleriane Ultra Moisturiser such as Toleriane Ultra Crème, this is also designed to soothe and actively repair the skin barrier.

4/ SPF

It’s important to wear SPF every day – no matter what your skin type is. But for those with rosacea, it’s especially crucial. Anthelios Invisible SPF 50+ is perfect for those with sensitive skin types.

5/ Face Mist

If you find that your skin feels tight or reactive during the day, try spritzing Toleriane Ultra 8 Mist to hydrate, repair and soothe.

P.M. Routine

Simple, consistent routines are important – but, you don’t need to buy a whole load of different products to use in the evening.

There’s no reason why your cleanser and serum can’t be the same as your morning routine. But you might want to add a richer night cream for extra hydration.

1/ Night cream

The Toleriane Ultra Overnight Moisturiser has an ultra-rich formula with niacinamide, neurosensine and vitamin A and is proven to soothe and repair the skin night after night.

La Roche Posay routine for: Fine lines/ ageing

A.M. routine

1/ Cleanse

A simple, hydrating cleanser like Toleriane Dermo Cleanser is a great no-frills option for ageing skin.

2/ Serum

Follow with a hydrating serum like Hyalu B5. This is perfect for plumping fine dehydration lines.

3/ SPF

For SPF, any of the Anthelios range is great — but if you find your skin is extra dehydrated, try the Anthelios Hydrating Cream SPF50. It contains the brand’s Thermal Spring Water, which is packed with natural ingredients to help replenish hydration and restore radiance.

P.M routine

Cleanse with your Toleriane Dermo Cleanser, and follow with Retinol B3 which has a gentle dose of retinol – a potent anti-ager. La Roche-Posay’s retinol is perfect for beginners, as it’s also combined with niacinamide to help soothe and reduce irritation.

1/ Moisturise

When using a retinol, you want a simple, non-irritating moisturiser to follow. Toleriane Sensitive moisturisers are a perfect accompaniment and you can choose from a fluid, crème or riche texture depending on how much hydration you think your skin needs.

La Roche Posay routine for: Dry skin

A.M. routine

Drier skin types love La Roche-Posay’s gentle, soothing formulas. If you’ve got dry skin, you want to keep your morning routine fairly basic — a simple cleanse, followed by adding lots of hydration back into the skin.

1/ Cleanse and apply serum

Toleriane Dermo Cleanser is great for a gentle, nourishing wash, followed with Hyalu B5 Serum to attract water back into the skin.

2/ Moisturise and mist

For moisturiser, Toleriane Ultra Crème or Riche are perfect for locking in hydration — whilst the Toleriane Ultra 8 Mist is great for spritzing onto skin whenever you feel dry.

3/ SPF

The Anthelios Hydrating Cream SPF50 is great for really dry skin.

P.M routine

For your evening routine, you can pretty much keep your skincare the same — minus the SPF. You might want to treat your skin to an extra hydrating step though, which is where the Nutritic Itense Rich can come in. It plumps, hydrates and soothes ultra dry skin.

La Roche Posay routine for: Skin pigmentation

A.M. routine

If marks of pigmentation are your concern, you want a routine that soothes and hydrates but also brightens and, of course, protects against further UV damage.

1/ Cleanse and apply serum

Start with Toleriane Softening Foaming Gel, before applying Vitamin C10.

La Roche-Posay’s vitamin C serum is one of the only ones specially formulated with sensitive skin in mind. The formula (that also contains a blend of salicylic and hyaluronic acid) is a favourite for battling pigmentation.

2/ Moisturise and SPF

Drier skin types might want to add in a Toleriane Ultra moisturiser here or you could go straight to an SPF.

Anthelios Invisible SPF 50+ is a winner for preventing hyperpigmentation, the tinted formula is great for also brightening any skin tone.

P.M. routine

1/ Cleanse and apply Serum

You can follow the same cleanse – vitamin C routine as the morning — or, if you want to use a retinol product to target your pigmentation, swap your vitamin C out for Retinol B3.

2/ Night cream

Finish with a gentle moisturiser to lock in moisture and soothe any irritation.
