So, my opinions may be a lil’ bit different than most, but this is what I’ve got: 1st verse: The verse is about a teen or tween who is often treated badly. She is bullied by the other kids, and even bullied by the teacher. Her parents are fighting and are probably either mentally or physically abusing her. Her sister, who she calls a manic, thinks that she’s crazy and says it to her face, and her brother just says it’s in their genes, making it seem like he’s used to crazy behavior and it’s normal to him. I imagined him smiling when he said this. Chorus: The chorus is probably one of the most dark aspects to this song, as it symbolizes the true thoughts of the girl, the darkness clinging to the thoughts she never says. Talking about “Bang Bang Bang Bang!”, it sounds like a gunshot, and when she says “Don’t you want to be the one?”, it’s almost like she’s asking someone to join her in her dark deeds, and questioning why nobody realizes just how unforgiving and messed up the world is. Almost like, why are they all just trying to act normal? We’re all wearing masks, yet we all know that we’re a little bit crazy and sadistic. The repetitive “don’t you want to?” makes me think that she’s saying, if the world is so fcked up, I might as well be the most fcked up one. And then she picks up a gun and starts a fight. 2nd verse: At first I think it’s talking about how everybody dresses up and puts on a mask before heading out, and then it talks about how they are in the clubs, and there are teenage kids there, maybe prostitutes, and it breaks her heart, but I think maybe it broke her mind more, and maybe she herself was even a prostitute. Then she talks about “my superstar”. This line is probably the one that I was most confused about, but ultimately I think that it means her accomplice, since she seemed like she was asking someone to join her it the chorus, and I think they did. Then she says that they fall, but some will be alright, and it almost makes me think that she was going around and killing the people who had hurt them, and then freeing them from their pasts and traumas. 3rd verse: She talks about how “sunlight falls onto his eyes but he don’t stir or turn” and how his calls will never be answered. While many people seem to think that he is a victim of her, I actually thought that the person mentioned was a teenager, and her accomplice, and that he had either committed suicide or betrayed her, leading to her killing him. That or suicide. I favor my suicide theory. I didn’t think that it could be a victim that much since the word choice she used seemed unusually beautiful for the type of song that it is, maybe signaling that she cared about the person, and since she saw his body and knew she would hear about it on the news makes me think that either he was dead when she got there and she had looked down on his body and then left, or that he had betrayed her and she had killed him for it. Then she says “Monday morning, lousy morning, what a day to see” signaling that her day did not start well. I think that this last screw was seeing someone she cared about die, which made her totally lose it, and go on a killing rampage before ultimately either getting killed by someone trying to stop her or killing herself. I think that the scariest thing about this song was the blank tone in which it was sung, which did not match what was being talked about. So, there you have it, that’s my opinion on the song! One of my favorite songs, and while it is dark, it is also motivating to me at the same time.
