When it comes to hair transplantation we receive a number of different questions about how the procedure works and what kind of results a patient can expect. Today, we’re going to dive into one of the most common topics we get asked about, undergoing a hair transplantation using someone else’s hair. Is this possible? We’ll be going through everything you need to know below.
How does a standard FUE hair transplant work?
FUE hair transplantation is the most revolutionary form of hair restoration currently available and it provides the most natural results.

The treatment works by transplanting individual follicles, which are typically between 1 and 4 hairs whilst the patient is under local anesthesia. The extraction procedure uses a micro surgical extraction instrument to remove the follicles, which is between 0.6mm and 1.0mm in diameter. The size of the tool and the technique used leaves minimal scarring, which is almost invisible to the naked eye.
The hair follicles are then reviewed and prepared under a microscope ready to be transplanted. Your doctor will use a specialist micro surgical needle to puncture the scalp area that is to receive the grafts. Your doctor will then blend the hair in, inserting the grafts at an angle and density that matches the original hair. This allows the hair to mimic a natural and realistic hair pattern.
Would you be able to use someone else’s hair for a hair transplant?
Can somebody else donate hair for my transplant is a question we’ve received a few times and the short answer is no, this is not something we would advise. When people think of transplants they think a hair transplant donor would be possible, doctors can transplant organs, why can’t they transplant hair?
A hair transplant using someone else’s hair would be almost impossible. A hair transplant utilizes only the hair from your own body due to compatibility issues. Due to this, a doctor would not use hair from another person to avoid rejection of donor hair by the recipient and prevent future infections.
If you use someone’s hair your body will develop an immune response automatically and reject the foreign hair which can result in infections and the hair will not grow – making the hair transplant unsuccessful.
Can you use body hair for a hair transplant?
There are some differences between the hair on the scalp and body hair, which, can make a hair transplant look unnatural and in some cases fail. There are a number of concerns which include;
- The different structure between scalp hair and body hair
- The process used of removing body hair
- The incompatibility between scalp hair and body hair
- Hair death in two or three years after the procedure
Typically body hair has a lower quality than scalp hair because the hair structure in the scalp is more coherent than the hair around the body. When it comes to hair transplantation, the degree of compatibility is very important to have a good result and body hair does not have this with the scalp.

The success rate of a hair transplant using body hair is significantly less than that of scalp hair. The main reason for this that body hair is not as healthy as that on the scalp which means not all hair will take.
Due to this, it would be advised not to use body hair for a hair transplant.
How should an FUE hair transplant be done?
Traditionally, when a hair transplant is done hair will only be taken from another area of the scalp. Due to this, some patients can’t have a hair transplant due to not having enough donor hair. Using hair that is found on the scalp provides the best and most natural-looking results as the transplanted hair has the same look and characteristics as your natural hair.
