This homemade Flamethrower Sauce Copycat Recipe is inspired by Dairy Queen Flamethrower Sauce and is what dreams are made of! It’s not the exact recipe but tastes amazing and in our opinion is much BETTER than the original DQ sauce. That’s because this sauce comes together in a blender, is made with three common ingredients, and is literally delicious on everything. Breakfast, add this sauce, lunch, add this sauce, dinner, ya, go get the sauce.
If you have been to our site before, you may have noticed that we love chipotle, jalapeno, habanero, peppers, and spice in general. If you haven’t been to our site, well now you know.

So, when we got to thinking about making a California Burger, I knew it needed a spicy sauce. We had Greek yogurt in the fridge and we always have ranch powder and chipotles in the pantry so I threw them in a blender. The result? This AMAZING sauce!
Dan says it tastes just like the Dairy Queen flamethrower sauce. He’s obsessed with their flamethrower burger. I think it tastes like Subway chipotle sauce. Unlike these mayo-based sauces, ours is made with Greek yogurt. This helps balance the heat of the chili peppers with creaminess and acid and keeps the sauce macro-friendly! Booyah!
After you’ve made this chipotle ranch sauce, definitely try it on our High Protein Breakfast Quesadilla, California Burger, and Breakfast Casserole with Turkey Sausage!

Ingredients and Substitutions
All substitutions are a 1:1 substitute unless otherwise noted
Chipotles in Adobo: Chipotles are actually roasted jalapenos. They have a smoky, almost sweet and spicy flavor. They are typically found in small cans can near salsa and tortillas in the grocery store. Sometimes the cans can says “canned adobo peppers” instead of “chipotle chile in adobo”.
Substitutions: Feel free to use 3 dried chipotle peppers, canned green chilies, 3 tablespoons of chipotle powder, or a fresh jalapeno. You can also start with only half of the called for spice and add more peppers until you reach your desired spice level.
Ranch Seasoning: Is there anything not good with Ranch? Pizza is not good with Ranch, ok other than that? But really, using Ranch seasoning is a great way to add a spice blend without having to measure out tons of spices, like garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and lots of others that make me tired just thinking about measuring them all.
Substitutions: Any of your favorite Ranch seasoning blends can be used. You can also make your own blend using a recipe like this one from Pip and Ebby.
Unsweetened Greek yogurt: We used full-fat Plain Greek yogurt to ensure the sauce has a super creamy base. I also love to get the half-size, 16oz, Greek yogurt because that is approximately 2 cups (what this recipe calls for). Then I can blend everything and just pour it back into the yogurt container!
Substitutions: You can use any brand or fat level you prefer. Just make sure it is plain, and unsweetened. Lactose-free or plant-based Greek style will also work but we do not recommend regular yogurt because it will be too runny. You can also use sour cream or mayo as a replacement.
How to Make this – Step by Step
Step one: Add everything to a blender or food processor.
Step two: Blend (I bet you didn’t see that one coming) for 1 minute or until you have a smooth and creamy consistency and even orange color throughout. You may need to scrap the sides down to incorporate all the yogurt.
Step three: Enjoy with everything!

Joy Tip!
For a quick sauce that requires no measuring, try to buy a 16-ounce Greek yogurt, a 7-ounce can of chipotles, and three packets of Ranch seasoning. This means you can dump the entire yogurt container, the entire chipotle can, and the three Ranch packets into the blender. Blend and then pour back into the Greek yogurt container. How easy?!
Facts and Common Questions
Where can I get canned chipotles in adobo?
Many grocery stores, along with superstores like Walmart and Target, carry canned chipotle in adobo sauce. They typically come in 7 oz cans. Canned chipotles are also available online here!

This recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free. Both the ranch seasoning and Greek yogurt contain dairy, so this recipe is not vegan or dairy-free. However, there are plant-based yogurt and ranch seasoning alternatives (such as this recipe) that can be used as substitutions to make this chipotle sauce vegan and dairy-free!
Is this the same recipe as the Flamethrower Sauce at Dairy Queen?
No. This delicious sauce was inspired by both the Flamethrower Sauce at Diary Queen and the Chiptole Southwest Sauce at Subway, but is not the exact recipe of either. In our opinion, it’s WAY better! Other copycat recipes have mayo and additional sugar. However, this recipe only has three simple ingredients and just tastes better!
What goes well with this sauce?
Some of our favorite items to put this sauce on include burgers, chicken sandwiches, and scrambled eggs. It also works great to replace ranch dressing as a spicy salad dressing! You can also try this zesty flavor as a dipping sauce for carrots, celery, and much more.
Want to Save it for Later? Here’s how!
Fridge: Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to two weeks. You may need to mix the sauce after being stored in the fridge as the liquid tends to separate a little. I prefer to store some in a mason jar and freeze the rest (see next).
Freezer: To freeze, either freeze in an airtight container with room to expand or place it in an ice cube tray or silicone mold and freeze in small bits. I prefer this method because after frozen, I transfer the cubes to a Ziploc bag and store them in the freezer. When ready to enjoy, I place however much I want in the fridge to thaw overnight.
Fun Fact
Chipotles do not grow on trees or bushes, they are not even a type of pepper! Chipotles are smoked and overripe red jalapenos. The overripe, shriveled jalapeños are picked to be smoked into chipotles. It takes about 10 jalapeños to make 1 pound of chipotle powder. (Source)
