There are many adjustments that must be made in order to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy. One such adjustment is the challenge of taking care of your skin when there is a seemingly never ending list of products to avoid while pregnant.
For one, during pregnancy your hormones may become inbalanced causing the skin to produce more sebum. This leads to the clogging of pores and an increase in dead skin cells which can cause acne. During pregnancy, you might also experience pigmentation, bumpy skin, acne, pruritic folliculitis, impetigo herpetiformis, and more. With all of these unpleasant surprises of pregnancy, it’s common that you would want to give special care to your skin by getting a refreshing deep cleaning HydraFacial treatment at your local medical spa.

The HydraFacial treatment is one of our most popular skin treatments for women who want to clear their skin from dirt, debris and congestion.
What is HydraFacial?
HydraFacial is a non-invasive skincare treatment that cleanses, extracts impurities, and hydrates your skin. It removes the excess sebum, impurities, and dead skin cells to make your skin look smoother and brighter. This facial treatment combines cleansing, extraction, and antioxidant properties which are vital for skin health.
HydraFacial treatment is a popular treatment for many skin conditions, but is very effective at helping deep clean the skin and treat acne.

The most frequently ingredients used in a HydraFacial treatment are:
- Medications for acne
- Inflammatory skin products
- Anti-aging products
- Cleansers and toners
- Glycolic acid
- Salicylic acid
- Lactic acid
These ingredients and formulations have properties that help to remove wrinkle lines, dark spots and treat sun-damaged skin; however, one ingredient, salicylic acid, needs more research to determine whether it is safe for topical use during pregnancy. Thankfully, the HydraFacial treatment is highly customizeable and the treatment can be performed with a salicylic acid alternative which makes the treatment safe for pregnancy.
Salicylic Acid for Acne
Salicylic acid is a type of beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), which is best for treating oily and sensitive skin for acne. This ingredient is available in many products like lotions, pads, creams, cleansers, and soaps.
The oral prescription of salicylic acid, such as aspirin, isn’t recommended during pregnancy as it may cause complications or other congenital anomalies. Studies have shown that salicylic acid during the last trimester can increase the chances of intracranial bleeding, while doctors recommend using not more than 2% of salicylic acid. The studies have also shown that pregnant women who took low-dose acetylsalicylic acid during their pregnancy have no adverse effects such as malformations, less birth weight, or other anomalies.
Salicylic acid also increases sensitivity to ultraviolet rays; therefore, dermatologists recommend protection from the sun while using BHA products.

The topical use of salicylic acid is safe during pregnancy (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists). However, further research is still needed to determine the adverse effects on the developmental changes of the fetus. Higher doses of salicylic acid may cause salicylate poisoning, such as dizziness, nausea, ringing in the ears, rapid breathing, etc. Further, some women are allergic to salicylic acid, so it can later cause some allergies like redness, swelling of lips, eyes, and face, itching, hives, breathing difficulty, and faintness.
Always talk to your doctor before applying any product or treatment that uses salicylic acid as an active ingredient, to avoid any harmful consequences.

Given the highly customizeable nature of the HydraFacial treatment, you can still safely receive your favorite HydraFacial treatment during pregnancy with a couple alternative ingredients. As a rule of thumb, you should always disclose your pregnancy to your provider prior to any treatment performed so that your provider can customize the treatment based on your needs. This disclosure is usually completed in pre-treatment paperwork and can be verbally disclosed to the provider prior to the treatment as well to ensure a safe and effective treatment.
