How to Be a Good Neighbor

Wonder what it takes to be a good neighbor? Below are a few ideas on how to be a good neighbor:
- Get to know your neighbors; they don’t have to become your best friends, but there are many reasons why knowing those who live closest to you is a good idea.
- Learn from neighbors with cultural backgrounds different from your own.
- Maintain your property and landscaping in an appropriate manner. Keep the neighborhood attractive for everyone.
- If you have pets, understand that not all of your neighbors are animal lovers; don’t let your dog or cat roam free and be aware of any noise your pets may make while you are not home.
- If you live in an area where there are wild birds or animals, please don’t feed them as this causes them to congregate in the area. While wildlife may be amusing to some, keep in mind that they are a nuisance to others.
- Offer to watch your neighbor’s house, water plants or pick-up newspapers while they are out of town.
- Pay attention to what is taking place on your street. If you notice something suspicious, call the Police Department. The non-emergency telephone number is 831-899-6748. In an emergency call 911. Consider forming a Neighborhood Watch group if one is not already active in your area.
- If you are hosting a gathering at your home, let your neighbors know in advance so that they can be prepared for the additional cars / traffic and a little more noise than usual and always end the party at a reasonable hour. Depending on the nature of the event, consider inviting your neighbors.
- Return anything you borrow as soon as possible and replace anything that belongs to your neighbor that you, your children or your pets have damaged.
- Always remember to say hello when you see each other!
