HOW “WAVES” BY DEAN LEWIS IMPACTED MY LIFE
In 2016, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. I battled it for years after, and in 2019, I was at my lowest point I had ever been in my life. I tried to find some kind of reliever, and I ended up turning to music. I happened to come across a song by the name of “Waves”. I listened to it, and found that I related to almost every word. It gave me a new sense of hope, on my journey of depression.

I feel a strong connection to this song, and I know it has a different meaning and lesson for every person. But for me it’s taught me that life has ups and downs. It’s helped me to find myself after I felt like I’d lost myself forever. I’ve learned life isn’t always going to be sunshine and rainbows. And this song helps teach you that when life isn’t going right you need to look for your “light in the dark”. You need to rise to your challenges and not give up.

If I was to break down a couple of the lyrics to what they mean to me and how they impact me as a person, it would look something like this. The lyric “There is a swelling storm” reminds me of when everything is starting to build up on me, or I feel like I’m starting to get depressed again. It’s the start of a storm deep within me. As the song continues it says “it takes control of the person that I thought I was”. This represents the depression that takes control of you, of the person you thought you were. When you reach the chorus you get to the main meaning of the song “It comes and goes in waves It always does, always does” this is the part that reminds you that depression is on and off. It represents a wave or a wave of emotions. But as for the always does part, that’s your reminder that you’ve done this before. You have beat depression before. You CAN and WILL do it again. DO NOT GIVE UP!
Thanks to this song I have found hope, expectation, confidence, and trust in myself and life. But my advice to you would be to always remember to look and find your “light in the dark”. No matter how small that light may be, it’s a win, it represents hope. You need to grab ahold of that light, and never let go, no matter what. Remember that you are bigger than your problems. You’ve battled your problems before, and have come out victorious. But I am confident that you too, will one day find your life saving “light in the dark”.
