Hey curl friends!
Yesterday I got my hair cut in preparation for my dad’s wedding, coming up next weekend. I went to my favorite Deva stylist at a salon in my hometown.

Here is the final result, before and after:
I love it! It’s not very different, just a bit shorter and with my layers re-vamped.
Anyway, down to business! Last week, I decided to spend some leftover gift card money at Target and I brought home an awesome cheap haul.
All together these four products cost about $12. Not too shabby! I’ve been using the Suave Naturals, the La Bella gel, and the Cantu curling cream recently, but for right now I’m just going to review the Suave and the La Bella. I’m going to experiment more with the Cantu, and perhaps try some of their other products, and get back to you.
Suave Naturals Conditioner, Tropical Coconut: $1.72 for 22.5 oz at Target ($0.08/oz)
How I’m using it:

I’ve been using this conditioner in a few ways. I’ve used it just as a rinse-out detangler, as a regular conditioner, and as a leave-in. When I use it as a detangler in the shower, I follow it with my usual Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus conditioner, which I leave in for three minutes before rinsing. As a regular conditioner, I leave the Suave in for three minutes before rinsing. As a leave-in, I apply about a silver-dollar sized amount over my hair without raking through, and then scrunch it up. This morning, I used it as a regular conditioner and then as a leave-in
What I like:
- First of all, talk about a bargain! At $1.72, this conditioner can’t really be beat price-wise.
- The scent is pleasant: it’s a very sweet coconut scent. The bottle says the fragrance is long-lasting-it actually is, but not in an overwhelming way. For example, I used it this morning and if I directly smell my hair, I can faintly smell it, but otherwise I don’t notice it throughout the day.
- It’s suuuuper slippery. It detangles really well. Even after I shampoo, when my hair is usually very tangly, this detangles right away. I’ve also used the Kinky Curly Knot Today as a detangler, which is much more expensive and a favorite among naturals, and I think this conditioner works just as well.
- My hair is soft and conditioned and not weighed down!
- Alcohol, silicone, and protein free!
What I don’t like:
- It’s thinner than other conditioners I’ve used, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but just something that is taking some getting used to.
- I’m not sure if this is due to how thin it is or just the mechanics of the bottle, but every time I squeeze the bottle, a LOT comes out. This obviously wouldn’t prevent me from purchasing it again, but it’s sort of annoying and something to be aware of. It’s hard to only get a little at a time out of the bottle.
Overall:
4 1/2 out of 5 stars! I really like this conditioner, and the price is just unbeatable, so hopefully it will continue to impress!
La Bella Lots of Curls Gel: $1.99 for 22 oz at Target ($0.09/oz)
How I’m using it:
I initially tried this gel with my hair sopping wet, before plopping, but it didn’t impress, so I switched to using it after plopping when my hair is still mostly wet but not dripping. This works much better. I take a silver dollar sized amount for each half of my head. I rub it between my hands and smooth it down section by section, then scrunch up.

What I like:
- Once again, the price is unbeatable. $1.99 for that giant monster bottle?? I’ll take it!
- The scent in the bottle is kind of light and citrusy, but it doesn’t linger at all, which is fine with me. There are enough smells going onto my hair that I don’t need anymore!
- It holds really well! It dries with a pretty light cast, and I really like a cast, so that is a definite positive for me. Then the cast scrunches out really easily, and my curls are soft and defined and lovely!
- It doesn’t make my hair take very long to dry, like the Eco Styler gel did. My hair air dries completely in about 2-2 1/2 hours, which is not bad.
- It’s alcohol, silicone, and protein free! Yay!
What I don’t like:
- Even though it holds well for the most part, it doesn’t last the entire day. By the end of the day, my hair is a little frizzier and less defined.
- The bottle is so big and heavy that it’s kind of hard to maneuver, especially once my hands are covered in gel!
Overall:
4 1/2 out of 5 stars! Unbeatable price, pretty good hold, makes my hair soft and defined. Works for me!
Here is my hair at the end of the day today. This morning I used the Suave Naturals as my conditioner and my leave-in, plopped for about 20 minutes, then used the La Bella gel. This is the result almost 12 hours later. Not bad!
I can’t wait to try the Garnier Fructis gel (although the La Bella works so well it almost seems unnecessary!). I’ve also been really wanting to try the TreSemme Naturals conditioner because that’s another popular one in the natural/curly community.
If you try any of these products, let me know what you think! And let me know if you have any product recommendations!
