Hi friends!
I’ve been a fan of Neutrogena as a brand for years now. Their makeup remover wipes are absolutely amazing in my opinion, and their mineral sunscreens are always in my beach bag. But I had never tried out any of their makeup, so last month I decided to change that. I picked up some items from their Hydro Boost range, which is designed to imbue moisture and hydration to the skin.

This review is specifically in regards to the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Concealer, which is in a stick format. Next week I will review another Hydro Boost product, the Hydrating Tint, so keep your eyes peeled for that!
But for now, let’s get into the concealer review!

HOW I APPLY THIS CONCEALER
Since I’m new to stick concealers, I first decided to take things slowly. I initially deposited product from the stick onto the back of my hand, and then stippled it in with my middle finger under my eyes, around my nose, and on any other areas of redness. But I ultimately found this method too fussy.
I then decided to swipe straight from the stick onto my skin, and blend the product out with my fingers. I like that method a lot better; much easier and more convenient. So that’s how I’ve been applying this product ever since.
MY THOUGHTS ON PACKAGING

This is a twist-up stick concealer with very lightweight, but cheap packaging. The specific problem I have is with the clear, plastic cap (not pictured). Every third or fourth time I put it back on the component, I don’t hear that satisfying *click* so it just pops off. For that reason this isn’t something I’d put in a makeup travel bag – product could get everywhere or could dry out.
Short side-story: I mentioned this issue on Instagram, and Neutrogena reached out to me asking for the batch # on my stick so they could inform their manufacturer. I really appreciated that! So hopefully this fault doesn’t effect all components, but I’m not sure.

MY THOUGHTS ON APPLICATION
As you can see from the image below, this concealer has a white core surrounded by flesh-colored pigment. The core (which applies clear) contains hydrating ingredients, while the pigment contains the coverage. The consistency of the product is quite thin and creamy so it applies very smoothly. It also blends out super easily. As I mentioned above, I just use my finger to gently pat it into my skin; it’s very easy.
RATING: 5 / 5 ⭐️
MY THOUGHTS ON COVERAGE / FINISH
I definitely agree with Neutrogena’s claim re: this product’s “natural-looking coverage” – it’s somewhere between a matte and dewy finish. I’d also say this sits squarely in the light-to-medium coverage range. You can build it up but I’d advise not to try too hard (I’ll tell you why down below). This is definitely not the concealer to use if you’re looking to make your skin appear flawless. I’m personally never looking for “perfect” makeup so this doesn’t bother me at all.

MY THOUGHTS ON SHADE SELECTION
There are only 5 shades available in this range, which is woefully low. Chances are you won’t be able to get your perfect match unfortunately. I picked up the shade Fair, which is light enough but the tone is quite yellow for me (I have a cool-to-neutral undertone). This is my major beef with drugstore bases – everything is yellow, yellow, yellow! Ugh, struggles, right?

MY THOUGHTS ON LONGEVITY
This is a funny one – I’ve had both good and bad experiences with the wear of this concealer. If I layer too much it tends to cake-up a bit and sit in fine lines after a few hours; nothing too horrible but it’s definitely worth noting. Also, make sure you do not use a really emollient moisturizer on any area where you intend to place this concealer – you will get creases galore!
I find the longevity is best when I apply the least amount of product that I can get away with, and when there is zero to little tackiness on my skin. I’d say I can get about 8 – 9 hours of decent wear under those conditions.
RATING: 3.5 / 5 ⭐️
MY THOUGHTS ON PRICE
This concealer retails for $14.99, but you can usually score good discounts at the drugstore. (I think Target sells it for $9.99, for example.) It’s pretty affordable overall, so I have no problem with the price. I take more issue with other factors like the wear, packaging & shade selection, rather than the price.
RATING: 5 / 5 ⭐️
FINAL THOUGHTS
Do I love this concealer? No. Do I hate this concealer? No. This is one of those products that sits squarely in the middle for me. I like how convenient it is to use and how creamy the consistency is. But I don’t care for the packaging, the shade range, or the inconsistency in the wear. I’ll continue using it, but would not repurchase.
Have you tried the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Concealer before? What are your thoughts? I’d love to know!
