About the Program and Admissions
Phlebotomists are the direct link between the patient and the laboratory. The laboratory technologist relies on the phlebotomist’s integrity and accuracy in procuring the proper specimens. Accurate diagnosis of a patient’s condition requires quality work. Phlebotomy is an entry-level position in the health care industry. Phlebotomists can further their education and become laboratory technicians or technologists.

Person’s seeking entry-level position as phlebotomists in hospitals, medical centers, home health care centers, clinics and other healthcare delivery institutions can enroll in the Phlebotomy Program at Malcolm X College. Phlebotomists are much needed healthcare professionals in the United States. The phlebotomist is responsible for procuring blood specimens from patients in various settings and transporting the specimens to the laboratory. The necessity for quality specimen collection and specimen preparation before testing is paramount to producing quality results for the most accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients. The phlebotomist is expected to be proficient in venous and skin punctures.
The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills required for entry-level phlebotomist. The program is offered on-campus in the format of an accelerated program with students completing in one semester. The Phlebotomy program is Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) and National Phlebotomy Association Inc. (NPA) approved. Graduates are eligible to sit for a national certification exams however being awarded an MXC Phlebotomy certificate is not contingent upon passing the phlebotomy certification exam. Those graduates that choose to become certified most often take the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) exam, National Healthcare Association (NHA), or American Medical Technologist (AMT).
Overview
The BC in Phlebotomy leads to certification through the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), and the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT). The phlebotomist is an entry level health care worker who serves as the direct link between the patient and the laboratory. The position is responsible for drawing both venous and arterial blood specimens from patients and sending blood to the laboratory. In some cases, physician approval is required. The laboratory technologist relies on the integrity and accuracy of the phlebotomist in procuring the proper specimens; accurate diagnosis of a patient’s condition can depend on quality work. Phlebotomists can further their education and become laboratory technicians or technologists.

This selective admissions program requires students to submit a separate application or to take additional action before enrolling.
Program Mission
The mission of the Phlebotomy Program is to graduate competent and ethical phlebotomists with the knowledge and the skills for career entry in the laboratory profession. It is also the department’s mission to support the MXC mission by offering quality phlebotomy courses designed to prepare students to demonstrate the skills and behaviors compatible with those of professional phlebotomists.
Admission Requirements
Applicants are eligible to apply online after the following is completed:
- CCC English Placement (CCC RTW) score of 3 or above
- Prerequisites: English 96 eligibility
- SAT score of 480 or above
- ACT score of 21 or above
- If the applicant has completed English 101 or higher at City Colleges of Chicago or a college outside the City Colleges of Chicago, the applicant has earned a grade of “C” or higher to be eligible
- Submit official college transcripts from all accredited colleges attended outside of City Colleges of Chicago
After it is confirmed the applicant is qualified, the applicant will receive a Phlebotomy Admissions Packet from the admission specialist with due dates. The applicant will submit the completed packet in a large envelope to The Heart [Room 1407] at Malcolm X College that will include the following:
- Medical Compliance Forms
- Copy of Immunizations and Lab Results
- Completion of Background Check using CastleBranch
