It is pretty clear that people have strong opinions about where to get the best burrito in Las Cruces.
Pulse put out the call for reader recommendations and there was a pretty big response. Recommendations from restaurants throughout Las Cruces and in Mesilla made it clear that the area offers residents variety and clear-cut southern New Mexico flavors that can’t be beat. The most recommended place to get the best burrito in town was overwhelmingly Santa Fe Grill.

Eighteen years in business and a menu that has expanded along the way, Santa Fe Grill’s 10 locations, in Pic Quiks throughout Las Cruces and Hatch, offer custom and specialty burritos, as well as other menu options.
“We’re very creative,” said owner Juan Morales.
Although the classics sell well — bean and cheese is still one of their best sellers — it’s the specialty menu that really takes their burritos to the next level. Morales said a lot of the specialty burritos are named after customers and celebrity wrestlers. The Iron Man — chicken, rice, green chile and salsa — was named for customer Mike Montoya, a high school teacher who was an IRON MAN triathlete. The first specialty burrito created at Santa Fe Grill was the Stone Cold Stunner — two steak, pico de gallo, barbecue and provolone — named after Morales’ favorite wrestler, Steve Austin.
Favorites among customers tend to vary by location, Morales said, but overall all the menu options consistently sell.
“At different stores close to campus (customers) like the Medicine Man,” he said “Go to Missouri (Avenue) and people go in for the Big Asada. Sonoma Ranch (Boulevard) they like the Deer Hunter, which is a smaller version of the Medicine Man.”
The Medicine Man was the most recommended among those who mentioned Santa Fe Grill. The burrito is filled with steak, chicken, bacon, potato, green chile, cheese and milanesa (a white sauce).
Creativity and good customer service are what Morales attributes most to the restaurant’s success. He also calls out “Master Chef Cartucci,” who mans the Missouri Avenue grill, as the “heart and soul of the operation,” as well as his other loyal team members.
From Andele’s and El Patron to Go Burger and Cha Chi’s, it was hard to decipher exactly how to rank the other top contenders, as most received an equal amount of mentions. What’s clear from the recommendations are that no burrito is complete without a little spice — red or green chile is a must — and the tortilla can make or break a burrito.
Sun-News employees also named some of their favorites:
Robin Zielinski recommends
1. Best Burrito: A Santa Fe grill custom burrito
2. Where: Santa Fe Grill (10 locations, located throughout Las Cruces and Hatch)
3. Why: Custom burritos: that is why it’s undoubtably the best, because anyone can customize their own burrito in almost any way. I get a chile relleno burrito with no beans, with guacamole and potatoes. It is fresh and made to order.

Best Burrito: Red or green chile con carne
Where: El Sombrero Patio Café, 363 S. Espina St.
Why: Homemade-tasting flour tortilla, tender beef that’s infused with balances of spices — it’s spicy but not overpowering. Sauces also taste homemade and very fresh. It’s a large portion that comes with beans and rice and garnish of tomato and shredded lettuce.
Alexia Severson recommends
1. Best Burrito: Chile Relleno burrito
2. Where: Go Burger Drive-In, 1008 E. Lohman Ave.
3. Why: The chile relleno burrito at Go Burger is one of the best burritos in town because it is made by a locally-owned restaurant that has been making burritos for years. It is also one of the biggest burritos. It’s difficult to find a nearly a foot-long (I think) burrito, in town. What makes it taste so good is the texture of the roasted green chile and cheese combined with classic Mexican-style refried beans. It’s cooked just right and the tortilla is substantial enough to where it doesn’t get soggy. It’s a classic.

Best Burrito: The Cambray Burrito Plate (shredded beef) smothered in hot green chile
Where: Si Señor Restaurant, 1551 E. Amador Ave.

Why: The Cambray Burrito Plate (shredded beef) from Si Señor’s is dope. Probably my favorite in town. The shredded beef is perfectly seasoned. With the hot green chile sauce, it may just be the perfect smothered burrito. In fact, they’re so good, the plate comes with two burritos, because after one they know you’ll want another.
As an aside, I used to think that Si Senor was a little overpriced and the food was mediocre. Then I discovered the Cambray Burrito Plate, which changed everything.

Best Burrito: Bacon, potato and egg burrito smothered in hot green chile
Where: The Shed, 810 S. Valley Dr.
Why: The combination of salty bacon, fluffy egg, fried potatoes and the signature southwest ingredient, green chile, sits well on the hungry breakfast tongue. Don’t forget to add cheese.

Best Burrito: Breakfast burrito
Where: Chihuahua’s, located inside Frenger Food Court on the New Mexico State University campus
Why: Their menu is simple, but fresh and delicious. You can watch them make their homemade tortillas which are thick and buttery. I’m a fan of the classic breakfast burrito: eggs, ham, and green chile with cheddar cheese. The workers are machines and turn out quick, hot burritos before you can say, “How many calories exactly are in this?”
Steve Ramirez recommends
Breakfast Burrito: Egg and chorizo; Egg, bacon, and green chile; or egg, sausage, green chile
Where: Santa Fe Grill
Why: Hands down, the best breakfast burritos are from Santa Fe Grill — any of them. By nature, I’m not much of a breakfast person, but on the days I do eat it I almost always prefer a Santa Fe Grill breakfast burrito.
Lunch Burrito: Chicharron burrito
Where: Go Burger
Why: To me, lunch is the biggest selection because the selections are pretty vast. For lunch burritos, you can almost never go wrong with just about anything from Go Burger. Most of the burritos cost less than $6 and the size of Go Burger’s burritos are what I call “nuclear.” They’re huge — often two meals in one burrito. I like Go Burger’s chicharron burrito because it’s not made with all soft chicharrón, which you and I know can be moderately to severely gross. It’s more a mix of hard and soft, which, to me, makes it easier to eat, and it tastes better. Go Burger also uses what I consider to be excellent tortillas, that have really nice flavor. They taste more like homemade tortillas, and not the store-bought we’ve all become used to.
Honorable mentions: Bravo’s Cafe, 3205 S. Main St. A first-rate burrito, whatever you decide to get. The red meat burrito from La Cocina, 204 Conway Ave. The fajita burrito from Burger Time, 3231 N. Main St.
Dinner burrito: Green chile meat burrito
Where: Nopalito Restaurant, 310 S. Mesquite St. and 2605 Missouri Ave.
Why: Any of the above for lunch will also work for dinner, but some of those places, like La Cocina and Bravo’s are open pretty much for lunch only. But with that said, I really like Nopalitos’ green chile meat burrito. I definitely prefer a green chile burrito made with sliced round steak, or pork, rather than just plain old hamburger meat — if I want hamburger meat and green chile, I’ll get that as a burger at Whataburger, but that’s a totally different subject. So, to me, a very nice green chile and steak burrito can be had at Nopalitos at a decent price. Depending on how hungry you are, you can get that as a side to an order of Nopalitos’ enchiladas, and the combination becomes a real feast and a definite fix to any chile craving.
Honorable mentions: Si Señor has a nice dinner burrito at both the restaurant and Express. It’s a little bit pricey for what you get, but, still, some good eating.
Of course, I would be really short-sighted if I didn’t mention burritos made by good ‘ol mom! Even in her 80s, she still has a way of consistently making burritos just the way I like.
Cover Burrito
Burrito: Burrito plate smothered in green chile
Where: Dick’s Cafe, 2305 S Valley Dr.

Why: If you like beef and prefer a juicy burrito served with beans and rice, then this is your guy. For about $8 you’ll get a full lunch.
