Body hair is totally normal, but if you prefer to remove it, you’ve probably mastered the routine for areas like your underarms and legs. Knowing how to shave butt hairs, however—without missing a spot or worse, getting a nick near your anus—can be more of a challenge.
To start with the obvious, there’s really no way to fully see our behinds and know exactly where that sharp blade is going. Not to mention, your butthole is surrounded by lots of bacteria. So, you might also be worried about creating an open wound in the area (and getting a subsequent infection)—a scary yet valid concern, Anna Chacon, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami, tells SELF.

With the right technique though, you can avoid a nightmare scenario while also getting rid of any unwanted strands. Below, two dermatologists break down everything you need to know about how to shave butt hairs effectively—and, more importantly, safely.
Is it normal to have hair between my butt cheeks?
Just like you may have fuzz on your face, arms, legs, and crotch, you’ve probably got some where the sun doesn’t shine too. “We’re mammals, so we can technically have hair everywhere,” Mona Gohara, MD, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, tells SELF.
The strands near your anus aren’t totally random either. According to Dr. Gohara, they serve a practical purpose: protecting your vulnerable butthole from irritation caused by things like bacteria and sweat—while also reducing skin-to-skin friction and chafing between your cheeks as you move.

Generally, the answer is yes, according to both derms we spoke with. But before you spread your cheeks and go at it, there are a few things to keep in mind.
While your legs and underarms are fairly flat surfaces, the area inside your butt cheeks is curved, which can make it hard for a razor to glide smoothly and at the right angle. And when the blade doesn’t maintain consistent contact with your skin, you’re more likely to end up with annoying razor bumps, nicks, and ingrown hairs (since uneven, blunt ends can cause strands to curl back into the skin), Dr. Gohara says. And trust us: You definitely want to avoid these problems so close to your butthole.
What are the risks of shaving butt hairs, specifically?
While major complications are rare, one common issue you might run into is skin irritation. As you can probably feel for yourself, the tissue around your crack is relatively thin and therefore more sensitive, Dr. Chacon explains, which is why you’ll want to be extra careful there. Not to mention, shaving too often can strip your skin’s natural, lubricating oils, leaving the region dry and potentially very itchy.
