Whataburger History

Whataburger is a fast-food restaurant chain that was formed in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1950. The original founder was Harmon Dobson. The fifties were a golden age for drive-in restaurants since American vehicles were just starting to come back on the roads after enduring a recession and oil shortage a decade earlier.

Harmon’s tiny burger stall stood out from the rest by providing something new that people had never experienced before. His burgers were so big that customers had to hold them with both hands to consume. It’s estimated that they measured 5 inches in length.

The idea became an instant success and Dobson soon began to grow the enterprise and expand to other markets. Harmon later married his longtime girlfriend Grace Williamson in 1955 with the two becoming Whataburger’s “First Couple”. By the end of that decade, the restaurant had more than 20 locations and also opened its first restaurant outside Texas State in Pensacola, Florida.

On August 8, 2000, the restaurant marked its 50th anniversary with close to 575 restaurants in operation and tons of ardent fans all across the country. In 2001, Texas 77th Legislature officially recognized Whataburger as a “Texas Treasure”. Recently, they added new items to their menu including the Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich and Patty Melt.

The company is still family-owned and managed with each restaurant fully equipped to provide quality food. Their burgers are still made fresh and ready to order. They use 100% pure beef which is served on a big, toasted, 5-inch bun. Customers can still expect to be greeted with a smile 24/7, seven days a week.

While the restaurant continues to serve hot, fresh delicacies at their more than 790 stores spread across the country, the original burger stall in Corpus Christi is still very much entrenched in the company’s heart. Nowadays, Whataburger is a recognized brand with outlets all around the country from Florida to Arizona. Their burgers are not just big but delicious as well.
