Why Does It Take So Long To Recover From Anxiety Disorder?
Recovery from anxiety disorder often takes a lot of time because there are many aspects to recovery. For instance, here is a brief overview of some of the important aspects to consider:
1. Understand Anxiety Disorder
You first must understand anxiety disorder, what causes it, and what it takes to recover, which we refer to as the Two Levels of anxiety disorder recovery.

This understanding takes time because there is much to learn about anxiety disorder and how to overcome it.
2. Hyperstimulation
You must learn about hyperstimulation, the many ways hyperstimulation can affect the body, learn the physiological recovery strategies required to eliminate it, and then faithfully practice those strategies until hyperstimulation is eliminated.

Hyperstimulation can take a long time to eliminate and much longer than most people expect due to the many physiological changes hyperstimulation causes in the body.
For more information, Recovery Support members can read the “Hyperstimulation And Its Effects” article in chapter 14.
3. Address anxiety’s underlying factors (Level Two recovery).
While Level One recovery can take time, especially if you have become afraid of anxiety and its symptoms, Level Two recovery can take much longer.
That’s because Level Two recovery identifies and addresses the underlying factors – those beliefs, behaviors, situations and circumstances – that cause problems with anxiety and hyperstimulation.
Typically, there are many underlying factors that take time to discover, understand, and successfully address.
Level Two recovery also involves learning skills that replace unhealthy habits. Learning, applying, and becoming proficient at these new skills takes time.
4. Make healthy changes to your relationships and life circumstances.
In addition to addressing anxiety’s underlying factors (Level Two recovery), you’ll likely also need to make healthy changes within some of your relationships and life circumstances.
Too often, anxious people have unhealthy relationships that need to be addressed because they create a lot of anxiety and stress. Anxious people also often have life circumstances that need to be addressed for the same reason.
Making healthy changes to relationships and life circumstances can also take a lot of patience and time.
5. Practice, practice, practice.
Healthy behaviors that replace unhealthy behaviors only become automatic through practice, typically, a lot of practice. You won’t succeed if you don’t regularly practice your new skills.
While most of us would like a quicker resolution to anxiety disorder, it’s our experience that there isn’t a fast way to attain lasting success. And it’s important to remember that eliminating anxiety symptoms is just one part the recovery process. Dealing with Level Two recovery work is the only way to attain lasting success. And as previously mentioned, that takes time and effort.
However, if you are committed to overcoming anxiety disorder and living a healthier life, you will succeed if you stay the course and do the work. The benefits are life-lasting.
