How many pellets should i feed a 4 inch red eared slider?

Video how many pellets should i feed my turtle a day

More thoughts on food and supplements (cuttle bone, wheat germ for vitamin E)! I have a yellow bellied slider, but the feeding recommendations are the same for RES…

I got my YBS when she was 4″ (she was approx 2 years old at that time) and I changed her from her previous daily feeding schedule (full of lots pellets/shrimp/protein which I do think led to some shell curl and retained scutes) to the more-recommended schedule of pellets 3x/week and greens daily. She did not eat greens when I first got her, but I kept green leaf lettuce floating in her tank for weeks and she finally discovered it. She nibbles on this daily and I don’t feel so bad – she has a snack when she wants it. I also give her other veggies on non-pellet days to keep her happy and her diet varied. She still begs quite a bit every morning, but I think that’s just a turtle thing. I also keep some cuttlebone in the tank and she takes chunks off of it.

2 teaspoonfuls of commercial pellets is about the amount that would fit in her head if it was hollow. I always felt uneasy about guessing what quantity that would be (and worried that I was under- or over-feeding her), until I thought of this: I filled the corner of a plastic sandwich bag with pellets, added and removed pellets until it was roughly the size of her head (kept holding it up next to her head to gauge), then measured the quantity with my measuring spoon. Voila! Two teaspoons! I plan to periodically recalculate this as she grows.

All days: I float green leaf lettuce (her fave) for grazing and cuttlebone for calcium. I also have anacharis floating and growing in her tank

Sunday- No pellets

Monday- 1.5 tsp Zoomed growth turtle pellets 0.5 tsp Hikari Wheat Germ Koi pellets

Tuesday- No pellets, a few shreds of carrot

Wednesday- 1.5 tsp Zoomed growth turtle pellets 0.5 tsp Hikari Wheat Germ Koi pellets

Thursday-No pellets

Friday-1.5 tsp Zoomed growth turtle pellets 0.5 tsp Hikari Wheat Germ Koi pellets

Saturday- sometimes nothing extra, sometimes a few pieces of grapes or tomato or sweet potato as a treat

I feed her in her tank since she and her fish friends don’t leave any leftovers. I also make sure she’s eating her greens, but not devouring them. I read some good advice from MargeeD – if she’s blowing through her greens, she might be growing and in need of more protein/pellets. I thought that made a lot of sense.

I also saved this Turtle Pearl from AnthonyP: “A 3 inch Slider in my care will have a lot of greens offered to it; along with a mix of pellets that is MOSTLY high protein. A 5 inch Slider will get a mix of high and low protein pellets that is more even, along with the steady dose of greens. And an 8 inch Slider would still get the greens, but would only get a high protein food as an occasional snack, with most pellets being something like Zoomed Maintenance Formula.”

I plan to change from Zoomed Growth to Zoomed Maintenance formula when Tessa hits the 8″ mark.

Good luck!
