how to get corn starch out of carpet

As a parent you deal with a lot of bodily functions when it comes to your kids.

I am at the point where it doesn’t really phase me anymore when I’m changing a diaper or wiping a snotty nose.

I think most parents can agree though- that vomit is the worst! Especially when it gets all over your carpet.

When kids are little they don’t always make it to a bathroom or into a “throw up bowl” as we called it growing up. And that can cause vomit to get all over the carpet or in your car- leaving an unpleasant smell.

Of course when this happens your number one priority is making your child comfortable and cleaning them up. I know I feel so sad when the boys get sick, and all I want to do is snuggle them!

But after getting them situated there’s the daunting task of cleaning up the throw up, and let’s be honest- it’s not a fun task!

Little humans aren’t the only ones who can’t always control where they puke- if you are a pet owner you know very well that animals vomit all over the carpet, too.

I have learned that there are a few tried and true remedies for cleaning vomit out of carpet.

First, you are going to want to clean up the excess vomit from the area. Yes, this might be gross- but it has to be done! This means anything chunky (lovely, I know) or juicy. I have yet to find a product to take the grossness factor out of cleaning up throw up more enjoyable 🙂

Thank you to EnviroKlenz for partnering with us on this post.

EnviroKlenz Absorbent Neautralizer

I love this product for messes like throw up, blood, food or any other kinds of stains.

The Odor Neutralizer Granules attach themselves to the spilled materials and get to work instantly to effectively and safely remove the odors.

First of all, it absorbs the liquid of the spill so that liquid can’t do any further damage to what it’s been spilled on.

Its minimal & safe chemical react to neutralize the smells without any sort of perfume or harmful masking agents. You just apply it over the surface, let it sit for several minutes and then vacuum the excess up.

I have used this several times (that’s what happens when you have two little boys!) and it is definitely my go-to product for cleaning up messes.

Baking Soda

Sprinkle some baking soda on top of the remaining mess and let it sit for about 15 minutes. This helps it absorb the moisture. After you’ve waited 15 minutes take a scrub brush, an old tooth brush or anything with bristles and scrub away at the area to help loosen anything up.

Once that’s done vacuum up the excess baking soda. Voila!

Vinegar

After cleaning up the excess, chunky bits of vomit you can make your own mixture to help clean up the spot. Mix 2 cups of warm water in a large mixing bowl and then stir in 1 tbs. of table salt. Once the salt is dissolved mix in 12 cup of white vinegar, 1 T. clear dish or laundry detergent and 2 T rubbing alcohol.

Take a kitchen sponge, dip it in the cleaner and press into the vomit. You might want to do this several times over the stain. Every time you blot the with sponge you will be removing vomit.

Corn Starch

Corn starch can also help clean up throw up. You would use it just like you would the baking soda.

Clean up the big pieces, and sprinkle corn starch over the mess. Let it sit for a while and then vacuum it up.

Club Soda

After cleaning up the chunks, dab the area with a little club soda and drop of dish washing solution.

Gently rub the mixture using a small towel and then rinse with 1/2 cup vinegar diluted in 1 qt warm water. Soak up any excess with a paper towel. Repeat if necessary.

Expedite drying with a hair dryer on the cool setting or a fan.

You don’t usually wake up in the morning knowing if vomit clean up is going to be on your t0-do list. Typically, it springs on you out of nowhere- and it’s never convenient! But with these great remedies you can clean up, deodorize and be on your way.
