Posture is one element of human movement that is all-too important, but often overlooked by many patients. Shoulder, neck and upper back pain are commonly associated with poor posture, and kinesiology tape can improve these symptoms in some cases. In one particular case study, kinesiology tape progressively improved rounded shoulder posture and completely relieved the upper back pain in a female sedentary worker with rounded shoulder posture. For additional support, you can learn some posture-improving exercises from expert Sue Falsone PT, MS, SCS, ATC, CSCS, COMT, RYT. In the meantime, this episode of Dr. Phil Page’s Kinesiology Taping 101 Series will teach you a postural support kinesiology taping technique to try out with your patients suffering from back pain and discomfort.

- To begin, cut two long I-strips.
- Apply anchor over the upper trapezius without tension. Remove the backing and place the patient’s shoulders in a slightly retracted position. Remove the backing to the end of the tape, and apply the tape across the spine to the inferior border of the contralateral scapula with 25-50% tension. Apply the second anchor with no tension.
- Apply the second strip in the same manner on the other side, creating an “X” across the patient’s spine
- Rub the kinesiology tape down onto the skin to ensure optimum adhesion.
