The 8 Beauty Products Latinxs Swear by Thanks to Their Moms and Abuelas

how to use vitacilina on face

Whenever I get a massive headache, I don’t immediately reach for painkillers. Instead, I grab alcoholado — an alcohol rub with bay leaf extract and witch hazel that my mom has always had all over the house. I kid you not, she had her sala alcoholado, room alcoholado, and kitchen alcoholado. It would not only soothe away her headaches when damping a cloth with it and placing it on her forehead, but it would also soothe mosquito bites and sore muscles. She learned to use it thanks to her abuelita and her mom. And just like that, I use it religiously too. But also, I mostly like to sniff it whenever I’m homesick of Puerto Rico.

Now, if I were to mention all of the other habits I’ve picked up from my mom, abuela, and tías, there wouldn’t be enough word count. And I know, I’m not the only Latinx who feels that way. Just like me, there are countless other Latinxs who swear by specific beauty hacks or brands simply because they grew up watching their mom, abuela, and tías get ready with them.

Because for Latinxs, the way you present yourself to the world is crucial. Whether that is wearing lipstick to the corner store because you don’t know who you’re going to run into, or dressing up to simply parade your fire look in la sala, just because, we take our beauty routines and fashion choices seriously. That’s why I asked other Latinxs which beauty products they swear by thanks to their moms, abuelas, and tías.

From lipsticks you can always count on to moisturizers that are allegedly the reasons some abuelas have little to no wrinkles, ahead find eight products you should definitely consider adding into your routine even if you’re not Latinx.

Vitacilina

“[This Mexican ointment] has been on the market forever! My grandma used it for literally everything: mosquito bites, zits, bruises, scrapes, and cuts! My mom always had one in her bathroom, medicine cabinet, and one even in her makeup bag. Now, both my sisters and I can’t not have one!” — Sofía Calderón, student

Pond’s

“I use Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser because mami has used it all her life as a makeup remover. I buy the green cap one and I use cotton balls or pads to remove makeup from my face and Q-tips for eyes. Then, I rinse the extra product with water. Mami always did the same.” — Frances Solá-Santiago, producer and editorial director of Emperifollá.

“My abuelita always used Pond’s to take off her makeup at night and then as a night mask before going to bed. She always swore it was the reason she had virtually no wrinkles. Now, it’s become a crucial part of my beauty routine. I don’t go anywhere without my mini Pond’s cream.” — Laura Arrubla Toro, senior account executive at DKC News

Nenuco and Violetas Francesas

“I use Nenuco and Violetas Francesa because it takes me back to my childhood. Both my mom and my abuela used it religiously. My mom still uses them too! I usually apply whichever after taking a bath. It helps me go to sleep!” — Natalia Viera, curator & curatorial adviser

Witch Hazel

“T.N. Dickinson’s astringent was always in my grandma’s bathroom. And all my tías would use it and rave about it too. Now I can see why. I love putting it on a cotton pad, wiping my face, and then seeing all the gross stuff that it picked up off.” — Gabriel Bergado, entertainment editor at Teen Vogue

Maybelline Lipsticks

“My grandma was a Maybelline merchandiser in different drugstores and stores around Bayamón and Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, so my mom grew up [being] familiar with the brand. Her favorite [lipstick] shades have gotten discontinued over time. However, she finds the bullet lipsticks formula has stayed true to the original, even with its improvements, and chooses them over other brands for its accessibility, price, durability, and smooth texture. That’s why my first lipsticks back in middle school were Maybelline, and even now with my increased — high-end and drugstore — makeup knowledge, I always include a few of their lipsticks for a quick, easy and no-fail finish to my look. My favorite shades are Nude Embrace and Nude Nuance.” — Sara Negrón, student

Spoons (as Lash Curlers!)

“Back in the day when my family would travel to and from Nicaragua to Los Angeles, they would usually fly Copa Airlines. And back then in the ’80s, instead of plastic utensils, they would actually give you silverware, and so my mom kept this Copa Airlines teaspoon from one of her flights to use it as a lash curler. I remember always borrowing that spoon from her vanity as a kid when I first started putting on makeup. And now, every time I go to L.A., I still see the same spoon there. Nowadays, I do lash lifts because I have short, straight (and stubborn) lashes, but before, it was the spoon. No expensive lash curler would match up against the power of that Copa Airlines spoon that my mom took.” — Priscilla Castro, director of marketing at Planoly

Clinique

“I started using my Clinique combo (their bar of soap, Clarifying Lotion 2, and Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+) when I was around 14 years old. My mom had started the exact same routine when she was 19 years old, so she got me a kit too. Though, I really didn’t start using [Clinique] religiously until I was in college when I got acne. Their line for acne-prone skin made my acne and dark spots disappear after only a few months! And though, I’ve learned since then to replace their Clarifying Lotion 2 with witch hazel — which is more budget-friendly and my grandma’s beauty secret too — and experiment with other beauty brands, I still prefer their Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+.” — Ilka Rodriguez, grad student

Alcoholado

“My mom has always sworn by alcoholado. And now I do too. She always has one in the bathroom, in her bedside table, and one in the kitchen. There isn’t a headache, mosquito bite, sore muscle, or homesickness alcoholado can’t alleviate. But this alcohol rub with bay leaf extract and witch hazel soothes much more than topical woes, it’s like a warm hug from my mom and that’s sometimes all you need to feel better.” — Bianca Nieves, commerce editor at Teen Vogue
