If you’ve ever dealt with hard water at home or while on a trip, you know it can wreak havoc on your skin—leaving behind a slippery layer that can clog pores and make your skin feel dry. But I recently learned about an easy solution to this issue from a French woman (because you know they have good beauty tips): Use natural spring water to rinse your face.
I just visited a region in France called Auvergne, where life is built around healing waters. They have natural thermal baths, and it’s home to Volvic, a bottled water that comes straight from a natural spring at the base of a volcano. I asked some locals if they noticed a difference between tap water and natural spring water. The answer was yes, and they think it’s good for your skin too.

All you have to do is simply rinse your face with natural spring water or you can put it in a spray bottle for a quick spritz (you can apply it on a cotton pad too). Another great use—mix it into your at-home face mask recipes.
Volvic has a mild pH level, so it can help calm your skin. But the key player is a trace mineral it contains called silica, which can aid in improving your skin’s elasticity. Another natural spring water with similar nutrients is Evian. And then there’s thermal water, like Avene and Vichy, that comes with its own set of skin healing properties.

I reached out to Elizabeth Tanzi, M.D., founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and clinical professor of dermatology at George Washington Medical Center, to get her opinion. While she says there’s no scientific evidence that proves mineral water (known as natural spring water in the U.S.) can directly benefit the skin, she says it’s worth a try. (Especially if you’re traveling and don’t know what the water situation is going to be like.)
“Perhaps a less expensive way to get these minerals on the skin is a mineral water spray,” she says. “Particularly since the spray will sit on your skin.” And, of course as you already know, don’t forget to drink water too—that plays a huge role in keeping your skin healthy and hydrated.
