How to Make Natural Heat Protectant for Hair

olive oil heat protectant spray

Save your hair and your money by making this homemade natural heat protectant for hair. This recipe is simple, effective and easy to make. You’ll never go back to the store-bought stuff again!

If you use heat styling tools on your hair, you’re probably aware that all that blow drying, curling and straightening can be really tough on your hair. Heat damage is a real thing! It can leave your hair feeling damaged, dry and dull. It also makes your hair more prone to breaking and split ends, which is no good.

There are lots of commercial heat protectant sprays for hair on the market, but have you seen how expensive they are?! They’re also full of chemicals and artificial fragrances. Because of this, I prefer to make my own version.

My homemade heat protectant spray is much less expensive and it’s really easy to make. In fact, you probably have most of the ingredients on hand right now.

The ingredients in this recipe are also all natural and customizable to your individual needs and preferences, which I love.

Best of all, it works and keeps all the hair in my household looking and feeling healthy. And between myself and my 3 teenage daughters, I can assure you it’s gotten plenty of testing 😉

How Heat Protectants for Hair Work

Heat protectants work by coating the hair shafts to create a barrier between your hair and the heat from styling tools. It prevents your hair from getting too hot and scorching. This heat protectant barrier also helps prevent moisture loss from the hair, thus preventing it from drying out.

The ingredients in heat protectants don’t just prevent moisture loss, but they also add moisture to your hair. They can smooth out the hair cuticle with light conditioning agents and leave your hair feeling smoother and more hydrated after use.

That means you not only prevent heat damage when you use a heat protectant, but you also get the benefit of less frizzy hair. I love that part!

Ingredients and Supplies to Make this Natural Heat Protectant Spray

My DIY heat protectant spray is simpler to make than you might imagine.

For supplies you’ll need:

  • A small spray bottle – I like to use a small bottle for this spray. I feel like it’s easier to thoroughly mix the ingredients in a small container, but you can scale this recipe up to a larger size if desired.

This recipes uses a simple formula of only 4 ingredients:

  • Water
  • Aloe vera gel
  • A moisturizing carrier oil
  • Essential oils

The carrier oil and the essential oils are where you get to really customize this heat protectant spray to your liking. You can choose the ones that best meet your personal needs.

When choosing a carrier oil, keep in mind that they all have different smoke points, which is the temperature at which the oil will start to break down and produce smoke.

It’s best to choose a carrier oil with a high smoke point. You want your oil’s smoke point to be higher than the temperature settings on your heat tools.

Carrior Oil Suggestions

For carrier oils I recommend:

  • Avocado Oil (smoke point 375-520 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Sweet Almond Oil (smoke point 320-420 degrees Fahrenheit)
    • This is my preferred oil because it is lighter and less greasy feeling.
  • Olive Oil (smoke point 320-375 degrees Fahrenheit for extra virgin olive oil, 390-470 degrees Fahrenheit for refined olive oil)
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil (smoke point 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Grapeseed Oil (smoke point 420-485 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Argan Oil (smoke point 330-350 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Sunflower Oil (smoke point 440-450 degrees Fahrenheit)

Essential Oil Suggestions

Essential oils all have their own health benefits. You can use one, all or a combination of the essential oils listed below, depending on your preferences. For essential oils I recommend:

  • Lavender Essential Oil – Lavender essential oil is soothing and stress relieving. It contains antioxidants and antimicrobial properties. It’s great for calming itchy scalps and preventing dandruff. Lavender oil promotes good sleep. It’s also moisturizing and helps prevent hair breaking and splitting while promoting healthy hair growth.
  • Clary Sage Essential Oil – Clary sage essential oil is a also calming and great for relaxation. It can help strengthen hair and stimulate good blood flow to the scalp. Clary sage oil can help moisturize hair, balance oily scalps and reduce skin inflammation.
  • Rosemary Essential Oil – Rosemary essential oil is invigorating and great for mood boosting. It has antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s great for promoting scalp and hair health. Like the other oils listed here, it’s also helpful in soothing itchy skin and preventing dandruff.
  • Geranium Essential Oil – Geranium essential oil is great for relieving stress and boosting moods. It is moisturizing to the hair and nourishing to the scalp. It’s another essential oil that can sooth irritation, reduce dandruff and balance the skin’s natural oils.
