Steps To Getting An Abortion From Planned Parenthood

Specifically, there are three things you need before an abortion: an STI/STD test, an ultrasound, and a pregnancy test. A clinic like Planned Parenthood will also require additional things for paperwork and billing such as your ID and a credit card to pay for their services.

Step 1: A Lab-Quality Pregnancy Test

A pregnancy test is required to confirm you are truly pregnant. You’ve probably taken one or two or 10 home pregnancy tests but even with positive test results at home, you will need a lab-quality pregnancy test to meet the requirements of Planned Parenthood. You may be surprised how often a home pregnancy test can be inaccurate.

A lab-quality pregnancy test is better than a home pregnancy test because it directly measures your urine’s hCG levels. Learn more about why you need a pregnancy test to get an abortion when you contact us.

If the lab-grade pregnancy test is positive, the next step is to get an ultrasound.

Step 2: Get An Ultrasound

Before getting an abortion at Planned Parenthood you also need an ultrasound to view the pregnancy. This is a common procedure and serves several purposes. An ultrasound before an abortion:

  • Confirms You Are Pregnant: Yes, again. The ultrasound confirms you are indeed pregnant, and the pregnancy is viable. Why do I need so many pregnancy confirmations? An abortion is a serious medical procedure. Even if you plan to take a pill, it may seem simple, but it triggers your body to go through an intense process of terminating the pregnancy.

Studies show that 30% of early pregnancies end naturally in miscarriage. It’s very important to have a trained medical sonographer evaluate whether the pregnancy is indeed viable and growing in the uterus. If the pregnancy is not able to survive, an abortion procedure will not be necessary.

As a protection to your health, you need multiple levels of pregnancy confirmation.

  • Indicates The Gestational Age of The Pregnancy: Knowing the gestational age of the fetus will determine the type of abortion you can have. There are different abortion options offered by Planned Parenthood. Those are determined by the ultrasound and the gestational age of the fetus.
  • Determines Location of the Fetus: Knowing where the fetus is growing and located in your womb is extremely important. Sometimes the fetus can start to grow in the fallopian tube. When this happens, it is called an ectopic pregnancy and it’s a very serious condition.

Left untreated, an ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening. It also makes an abortion more challenging. If the abortion specialists at Planned Parenthood were to perform an abortion without first having an ultrasound to see where the fetus is located the abortion could run into complications. Many times, a pregnancy growing in the fallopian tube will require surgical removal.

Jewel Women’s Center provides free ultrasounds to women who are unexpectedly pregnant. When you complete the contact form, call, or text us, one of our team members will provide more information on why you need an ultrasound to get an abortion.

Step 3: Get An STI Test/STD Test

The third thing needed before getting an abortion through Planned Parenthood is a STI/STD test. The STI test is necessary to protect your health and offers liability protection for Planned Parenthood.

An STI test is required before an abortion because there is a chance that previously asymptomatic STDs will become symptomatic. What this means is a woman could be unaware she has an STI (due to it being asymptomatic – no symptoms). After the woman gets an abortion, if she suddenly has a rash and symptoms from the STI, logic would lead one to assume they received the STI during the procedure when it was actually just a dormant STI. In this way, the testing before an abortion protects Planned Parenthood.

The STI/STD test also protects you. It’s possible you could have an infection with no noticeable symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, untreated STIs can lead to infertility, organ damage, certain types of cancer, or death.

One STI that can lead to such issues is Chlamydia, the most common bacterial STI in the United States. According to studies on Chlamydia, nearly 70-95% of infected women are unaware they have Chlamydia. Once an abortion procedure is performed by Planned Parenthood, they are more likely to experience pelvic inflammation from the STI. This condition is referred to as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

At Jewel Women’s Center, we offer a free STI/STD test as part of our pre-abortion screening in Schuylkill County PA. At our Schuylkill Haven location, we have a team who can provide this testing. It’s a simple test and will let you know whether you have an infection without symptoms that needs to be treated.
