Returning home to Chambersburg to raise his family, Duff continued his career as a Physical Education teacher and football coach, moving on to roles ranging from Assistant Principal to Superintendent in Waynesboro, Chambersburg, and Greencastle-Antrim School Districts. As his career advanced, Duff’s heart remained focused on children; it was always “Children First.”
Duff authored numerous articles and books on education and leadership over the years. In addition, he was a founding partner in a number of entrepreneurial ventures including The RLI Group, Blendedschools.net, Pennsylvania Leadership Development Center, National and Mid-Atlantic Consortium for Mass Customized Learning and the Academy for Global Leadership.
Duff always had a knack for exploring educational opportunities that stretched beyond the traditional school structure. With that, his influence impacted and continues to impact the academic trajectory of countless teachers, administrators, educators and, most importantly, children.
Beyond his educational and professional successes, Duff was most proud of his family. He is survived by his wife, Janice “Jay;” his son, Matt (wife, Jacki); his daughter, Erin Scalese (husband, Mark); and grandchildren, Jordan, Sydney, Luke, Dominick, and Hayden.

Lovingly known as “Pa” to his grandkids, Duff enjoyed the simpler things in life. He deemed nothing better than watching the sunrise on his back porch, cup of coffee in-hand, before heading out to hike along the Blue Ridge Mountains with his two “pups.” Duff doted on his kids and grandkids, enjoying listening to their stories, watching their many athletic games, tournaments, theatrical productions, and most importantly asking them questions – always trying to make them think.
He loved helping his own kids with house projects, or simply taking his turn with the dishes. His heart was one of service. Duff always attributed his success in life to his adoring wife, Jay, with whom he had spent the past sixty years.
Duff was active in Cave Spring United Methodist Church in Roanoke, Va., and a member of Falling Spring Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg, Pa.
A Celebration of Life is planned for 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Cave Spring United Methodist Church in Roanoke, Va. The Revs. Lauren Lobenhofer and Brad Hill will officiate. A reception will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Carilion Cancer Center. Please earmark the donation in memory of Duff Rearick (https://carilionfoundation.org/give).
