How does the SELFCheck Pregnancy Blood Test work?
SELFCheck’s Pregnancy Blood Test looks for a hormone called hCG. This hormone becomes more present in the blood when a woman becomes pregnancy. Throughout the course of a woman’s pregnancy, the concentration of this hormone increases.
When the concentration of hCG in the blood is higher than 25 IU/L, it produces a positive pregnancy result.
Urine pregnancy tests look for the same hormone. However, as the concentration is likely to be higher in the blood than the urine – especially in the early stages of pregnancy.
The same kind of blood test is used in hospitals to confirm a positive urine pregnancy test.
The blood test can detect hCG in the blood approximately 11 days after conception.
How Do I Use The SELFCheck Pregnancy Blood Test?

- 1 dropper bottle containing 1ml diluent
- 1 plastic pipette
- 1 test device
- 2 sterile lancets
- Instructions

You will also need a timing device (such as a watch with a second hand) and a tissue, though these are not provided with the test.
Before you begin the test, you must read the instructions carefully. Misinterpreting the instructions may result in false-positive or false-negative results.
Make sure you have everything you need to conduct the test before you begin.
Do not open the foil pouch until you are ready to take the test.
Take care when removing the test device from the foil pouch. The foil pouch contains a desiccant. This is a small white pouch that keeps the inside of the foil wrapper dry. You can throw away the desiccant in your normal waste.
The included lancets contain a sterile needle that is activated when the switch is pressed, and recesses into the plastic shrouding once used.
Do not press the switch on the lancet until you are ready to prick your finger. The lancets can only be activated once.
- Use the included alcohol wipe to clean your finger tip before using the sterile lancet.
- Use the lancet to prick your finger, and collect the blood using the provided pipette. If you struggle to get enough blood out of your finger, use the second lancet on another finger.
- Add to the blood to the test device, and add the diluent solution as instructed.
- Wait 5 minutes for your result.
Use a clean and dry tissue to wipe away any blood from your fingertip. Apply a plaster to protect the lanced site.
Once you have finished using your test, you can discard the testing apparatus in your household waste.
How do I interpret the results?
The results come through as either a single or double line on the test device – similar to many other pregnancy tests available on the market.
A double line indicates a positive test result. This means you are pregnant.

A single line signifies a negative test result. This means you are not pregnant.
If no line appears on the test device, it is likely that the test has been conducted incorrectly, or that there is an issue with the test.
What should I do if the result is positive?
If your pregnancy blood test returns a positive result, inform your doctor. They will discuss appropriate lifestyle and health changes you may need to make during pregnancy.
You should not stop taking any medicines prescribed to you following a positive result without first consulting your doctor.
What should I do if the result is negative?
If your test result is negative, it means that either there is no hCG in your blood, or very low levels (below 25 UI/L) of hCG in your blood. In this case, it is unlikely that you are pregnant.
However, you may get a false-negative if your periods are irregular, or if you have miscalculated the date of your period. If your period does not start within a week, repeat the test.
If the second test comes back negative, but your period has not started, consult your doctor. Your late period may be caused by something else.
What if the line is faint?
If the test appears positive, but the second line is very faint, it may be that the test was taken too early.
Repeat the test in a week for validation.
What if I receive an invalid result?
If you receive an invalid result, it could mean that too much or too little blood was added, or that not enough diluent was used.
In most cases, the invalid result is the result of not adding enough diluent. Adding 2 more drops of diluent to the blood sample can fix this and produce a result.
