Serums have long been a mystery to me — no, a challenge. Thanks to (many, many) brilliant beauty editors here, I have a good understanding of the market’s (many, many) ingredients, and have tested dozens, if not hundreds of facial serums at this point. But after these many trial runs and Best of Beauty Award test periods, I’ve come to a sad realization: Most formulas are too heavy for my skin, which has grown more sensitive with age and often breaks out if I go beyond my usual moisturizer-and-eye-cream routine. A ray of hope recently arrived in my mailbox, however, when Allure features director Jessica Cruel offered to let me review The Nue Co.’s Topical C powdered supplement for October’s Allure Beauty Box.
I know what you’re thinking: Aren’t powders and serums two different things? In general, serums come in liquid or gel form, whereas powders are — well, powders. But the purpose that Topical C and a traditional vitamin-C serum serves are one and the same. Formatted as a powder that can be mixed into your other skin-care products or water, Topical C allows you to easily incorporate vitamin C — a prized ingredient with a science-backed list of benefits, including brightening — into your regimen without adding any additional weight. It is the skin-care equivalent of those expensive boosts on every smoothie shop’s menu (with the important distinction that Topical C is actually worth the price).

The convenience of Topical C’s format is a huge plus: It can be applied in a range of methods, allowing you to distribute it by mixing a few shakes into a favorite moisturizer or serum, or simply adding a few drops of water and applying it plain. I initially added it into Olay’s Whip Moisturizer with SPF 40, which worked great as a lightweight mixer until indoor-heating-induced dryness and pre-winter winds smacked my skin with dehydration. To up my daily moisture, I switched to the Radiate Face Jelly, an aloe vera-based gel formula from Base Butter that boosts moisture and seamlessly mixes with Topical C. Even after I add an eye cream (I’m loving Saturday Skin’s Wide Awake lately) and sunscreen (Biossance’s SPF 30 pick is my go-to right now). As far as I can tell, this routine has been a winning combination for my skin, which looks a whole lot brighter and has fewer breakouts than it did just a few weeks ago.
Beyond its immediate benefits for your skin, Topical C is thoughtfully packaged. As reported in our story on its benefits, vitamin C breaks down when exposed to the sun, so many products that contain it come in dark bottles and tubes. And for those who always do background research on all the products they buy, it’s also worth noting that Topical C comes from a company that values sustainable, ethical sourcing: “95 percent of our materials are infinitely recyclable,” The Nue Co.’s website reads. “We’re working on the other five percent.” All products from the brand are cruelty-free, as well, and are often vegan.

Ringing in at $70, it is not an inexpensive skin-care product, but I can attest to its longevity: Despite using it daily for over four weeks, I’ve barely made a dent in the bottle.
You can pick it up on thenueco.com or snag it in our October Beauty Box, which is packed with other goodies for your skin, nails, and lips this month. Ready to try it? Click the link below.
