8 Fun Things to do in Corydon, Indiana

Corydon, Indiana is such a beautiful area. It is rich in history with so many hidden gems. Exloring Corydon and surrounding areas was definitely a highlight of our Indiana road trip. Our visit to Corydon was a part of a familiarization trip with This Is Indiana. Every opinion expressed about my stay is mine alone.

1.Downtown Historical Sites

Corydon was founded in 1808 and was the first capital of the Indiana Territory. Above is Indiana’s first Capital Building!

It is believed that William Henry Harrison then the first governor of the Indiana Territory named the town from the hynm “The Pastoral Elegy.” The song laments the death of a shepherd boy named Corydon. The future president of the United States thought “Corydon” fitting to be the name of the settlement.

So many of the downtown buildings have records of their history and are on the national record of historic places.

2. Battle of Corydon Memorial Park

The Battle of Corydon is the only official battle site from the civil war fought in Indiana and one of few fought on northern soil. On July 9, 1863, Confederate brigadier general John Hunt Morgan led his cavalry of over 2,000 men across the Ohio River into Indiana. Only about 450 home guard men opposed and were quickly defeated and the town surrendered.

3. Butt Drugs

Immerse yourself in times past by visiting Butt Drugs, yes it’s the real name! 😉 My kids definitely got a kick out of it.

You’ll find a little bit of everything here, but do enjoy an old fashioned soda fountain drink!

4. Indian Creek Market and Deli

Indian Creek Market and Deli is a great place to stop for a quick and unique lunch.

I loved my “Hoosier Mama” sandwich with white cheddar, pimento cheese, Applewood ham, spinach, and tomato on a toasted bun-so good! We also loved browsing the store and found treats to take home!
