Where Will You Be When Diarrhea Strikes” is a variation of an advertising slogan for the Imodium brand of diarrhea medicine. The phrase is typically used to caption image macros in which the subject appears to be suffering from gastrointestinal complications.

Origin

The diarrhea medicine brand Imodium has produced several advertisements with the slogan “Where will you be when your diarrhea comes back?” in the mid to late 2000s. On January 22nd, 2008, YouTuber Dairenn Lombard uploaded an Imodium ad featuring a woman dancing with a man in a record store who is suddenly struck with diarrhea (reupload shown below).

Spread

On May 25th, 2012, Redditor cthrubuoy submitted a post titled “Where will you be?” to the /r/funny[1] subreddit, which featured an Imodium ad with an awkward-looking man with two women in a hot tub accompanied by the slogan “Where will you be when your diarrhea comes back?” (shown below). Prior to being archived, the post gathered more than 9,600 up votes and 300 comments. On February 20th, 2013, Redditor TheGnarleyGoat uploaded an image titled “Where will you be when diarrhea strikes?” to the /r/funny[4] subreddit, featuring a man wearing a costume of the character James Sullivan from the 2001 animated film Monsters, Inc. (shown below, right) Before the post was archived, it gathered over 13,000 up votes and 110 comments.

On March 3rd, Imgur[2] user Twinsfan91 uploaded an animated GIF titled “Where will you be when”, featuring a scene for the animated film The Little Mermaid with the caption “Diarrhea” (shown below, left). In the next nine months, the image received upwards of 676,000 views and 5,400 points. On June 2nd, Imgur[3] user SlightlyNormal uploaded an animated GIF titled “Where will you be when diarrhea strikes,” featuring a singer twerking followed by a canned chicken being dumped on to a plate (shown below, right). Within the first five months, the upload garnered over 219,000 views and 6,100 points.
